From 2012 my salary will increase....

UK taxis are the worst I have experienced outside of India. It's done so much better on the Continent. I wish we would stop using Mondeos and Skodas and buy Mercs, ideally E-Class+

EDIT: and don't get me started on the dreadful LTI black cab...

Oslo sounds great......I liked Norway, was many years ago I was there though and not much time for doing anything other than training and freezing to death though.

Keep meaning to visit as a civvie.....

When I was on a flight a few months ago I was sat near an English guy in army gear who had just done some training here, he had some maps and stuff with him I think.

Do they send people here in the winter to see how long it takes them to freeze to death? :p

If the taxi fares don't increase, then I'm all for getting nicer cars. However, the amount of time that I'm in the seat of a Octavia/Mondeo/Superb is so low that it really doesn't matter. We don't need to be carried around in luxury all the time, and if we were then we'd have to pay for it.

Pretty much....my ML training was 8 months of arctic, mountain and extreme terrain training north of Harstad and in the Svalbard. Gets down to about -30 or so, your eyeslids can freeze together if your not careful...

This is interesting: http://www.priceoftravel.com/555/world-taxi-prices-what-a-3-kilometer-ride-costs-in-72-big-cities/

Cost of a 3-kilometer ride in April, 2011
$0.90 – $1.58 Delhi, India
$11.48 – $14.75 London, England
$18.62 – $24.21 Oslo, Norway
$20.22 – $26.97 Zurich, Switzerland

Probably why the local taxis here in Zurich are good - they are the most expensive in the world!

I took a taxi ride from Copenhagen to a small place in north Denmark called Gilleleje. 80Km, cost about £150 on company expenses. This was in 2009 though.

Heh that's my Brithday :)

Best of luck with it mate.

thanks.

That sounds like fun.................................

Not as much fun as digging your own hole in the snow and ice of a frozen lake, complete in full kit (including skis) just so you can jump in to simulate a icebreak while crossing a frozen lake........All the while trying to keep your stuff dry....

I love the marines idea of 'simulate', in other words 'do it for real'......

Dear god, i pick one up from the airport taxi rank to head 20 miles home on NSL country lanes, NEVER AGAIN i was almost deaf by the time i got home, worst taxi ride EVER and that includes almost being killed in Dubai.
Agreed, I absolutely hate+ black cabs. I will use them only when I am in a situation where I cannot wait for anything else and there are black cabs right in front of me. They:
  • Are slow
  • Are noisy
  • Have terrible ride quality
  • Constantly go "click...click" every time they go below about 1 MPH
  • Have absent build quality that results in everything rattling like ****
  • Have uncomfortable seats
  • Have abysmal handling and lean around corners like a car from the past
  • Have noisy agricultural diesel engines
  • Have bad climate regulation, not aided by drivers going around with the windows open
  • Have seats that mean you slide over when it goes around corners
  • Are expensive to use
For the customer the LTI black cab has ZERO redeeming features. For the price of a black cab I can often get a Mercedes-Benz E-Class from Addison Lee; I can almost certainly get a Galaxy for the same or less money, unless it's a very short journey.

I've seen some footage of them doing that. Didn't know you had to dig your own hole though haha, that's hilarious. :D

Humiliating.

In normal circumstances you don't.....we got a bit rowdy a few nights before so we got shafted, we were made to wait an extra day as well just so it was colder....

I formally begin my new job/study on 30th January......I've never been so apprehensive about something in my life tbh.

I wanted to take some time out to spend with my boy and the severance package I got was pretty good so a couple of months off seemed practical, especially with Chrismas coming up.

I am relieved not to be part of something I wasn't really happy with anyway so although I will be earning significantly less than before it is all good.....:)

Good luck with next year. :) How long will the study take?

Thanks.....the PhD will probably be around 4 years or so...I technically have 3 years in which to submit my thesis. The doctorate is really a sideline to the research position itself so I can take longer if I do it p/time.
