hi guys
Found this monitor is this any good for 3D gaming & 3D films ?
Any views would be great help ,as planning a upgrade after Xmas :D

Hi there,

That particular ACER seems to be pretty new with no proper reviews of it yet. The acer 3D monitors are generally OK, but I would suggest the ASUS ones over it if you have a Nvidia graphics card.

If you have an AMD graphics card then you really shouldn't go for this acer monitor as you will want a monitor that does 3D via Displayport 1.2 - so you will want one of the samsung monitors that does this like the. The A750 and 950 series.

Also, in reply to something you said in your previous post, the image quality of current LED backlit and CCFL backlit LCD montor is not affected by the backlight type and you should be able to colour calibrate a "LCD" montor as an"LED" one. Therefore, I wouldn't get hung up about going with an "LED" or "LCD" monitor - just go for the one that best meets your needs.

Therefore, if you are looking for a 3D monitor for around £200 and have an Nvidia graphics card then the best option at the moment is the Asus VG236HE - which is known to be very good (reviews here and here).

the acer seems to have the built-in IR receiver so saves buying one the extra money can go on a better Graphics card ?
Just in the planning stage at the moment trying to weigh all options at the moment
Any views or replys is a great help, to help me get the best deal & spec as there is so many diff makes & models out

The Acer GR235H uses passive 3D so if you're looking for a smooth experience in 2D or looking to gain something extra from a new GPU do bear in mind this model is restricted to 60Hz. The technology is similar to that used on the LG D2342P (which may be a better offer than the Acer) and the HP 2311GT as the panel used is the same LG number.

As PCM mentions, this monitor is passive 3D so no extra kit is required to give you 3D. However, the downsides are:

- in 3D each eye only sees half the resolution due to the passive technology, hence each eye only sees a 1920x540 image and visual detail is lost due to this
- 3D only works via HDMI, so you are limited to 1080p@24Hz (per eye) or 720p@60Hz (per eye) due to HDMI bandwidth- so not ideal for gaming (but fine for films). In contrast an active shutter glasses system (which uses dual-link DVI or Displayport 1.2) supports full 1080p@60Hz (per eye)
- When run in 3D mode the monitor is still restricted to a 60Hz refresh rate, so no super-smooth 120Hz "2D" gaming is available (as available on all 120Hz shutter glasses 3D monitors)

With this in mind a passive 3D monitor like this is a pretty decent budget 3D monitor. As you get your 3D gaming/films working and the price is pretty low (though I would still wait for solid reviews before buying it, as PCM mentions there are similar monitors already out which are known to perform well in this area) - however you will likely get a better overall experience if you went for a (albeit more expensive) 120Hz monitor + shutter glasses. Alternatively, if you are more interested in image quality and colour accuracy, throw 3D out the window and try an IPS panel monitor which is decent at gaming like the Dell U2311HM (review here).

wish I could forget the 3D side but need it for CS5 aswell as it has 3D editing for photos ! Did not know this lol just installed the program tonight so need 3D to make it future proof with this program aswel now

Ah, is it this?

If so they you will need a monitor that is compatible with Nvidia 3D vision.

Also, for this use I wouldn't recommend a passive 3D monitor due to the halved resolution per eye - which means you see much less details compared to an active shutter one.

its Adobe Photoshop CS5 Extended which has 3D editing aswel

at the moment but loads of 3D plugins coming out nxt yr using 3D rendering
like your link states NVIDIA® 3D Vision™ but some are not using this format ,which is a shame would make it easy for me to choose a monitor
