HBO: Boardwalk Empire

no chance.

the only thing that comes close to the wire or even beats it is deadwood.

Boss has nowhere near the same character development. in fact the characters are rather lame tbh.

boardwalk empire is good but nowhere near as good as:

deadwood (amazing character development)
the wire (similar quality of character development as above)
sopranos (pretty good character development)
first half of seasons of lost
first half of seasons of the shield
game of thrones (very good character development)
spartacus
rome

brotherhood is similar to boardwalk empire (worth looking into) irish americans who are corrupt and have power, 2 brothers one a criminal and the other a politician.

deadwood would be my first choice though, then the wire (simply because the quality of the wire, picture wise is bad, its only 4:3 and grainy imo)

There is nothing wrong with The Wire in terms of picture quality.

Also, While I agree Deadwood is brilliant television, I think if we are talking about Television Series in general The West Wing beats anything that it comes up against, certainly in the first ~four seasons, it's quite simply as good as television will ever get. There are several that come close though; The Wire, Band of Brothers, The Shield, Boardwalk Empire, Rome are just the first that spring to mind.

Also, Mad Men oozes class, in terms of writing and acting and production value.

Also, in terms of pure enjoyment, besides watching the aforementioned shows for the first time Dexter is fantastic.

It was shot that way on purpose, both counts.

I enjoy Blue Bloods, another excellent show. Easily the best cop show still going IMHO, although its so much more than that.

Every episode is the same format though, can see it from a mile off.

A number of new shows this fall that people should check out, which are turning out to be ok.

Disclaimer: TV has been a lot better than this list. There is a mix of new shows here that serve value entertainment.

Homeland, first few episodes are kinda of slow but it keeps getting better and better. Includes Damian Lewis who is fantastic.

Hell on Wheels, still early days but it has the makings of something half-decent. Sure its half of what Deadwood was but its going places.

Person of Interest, certainly not flawless but great entertainment, again, getting much much better later into the season.

Grimm, more fantasy and vampires and monsters related action but its picked up a lot in recent episodes.
