Is evolution a religion?

No, it's a scientific theory.

Now, if you want to argue that some treat science as if it was a religion, that's a different argument entirely...

No, it isn't.

It's a scientific theory based on observable data and testable hypothesis that don't claim to be absolute facts but encourage questioning to better our understanding.

I agree with you there :) I misread the the question, for this I am sorry. Darwens theory on evolution on the other hand is a religion, apparently more so than all the major religions. Imo.

It's perfectly relative to your post :p read my edit :)
Have revisited post edit :p

How sure is "religious believer X" that God makes the sun rise?

Don't try and deny that some have a blind faith in science - it's impossible to defend, because many DO have a blind faith in it. They don't know the facts, evidence, nor even the methods of testing, but because it's "SCIENCE!!2" it "must be true!"

Now swap "SCIENCE!!2" with "Religion". Pot, black, etc.
Yes people do have blind faith in it particularly those who in reality have no idea what they are talking about, ironicly those that are very outspoken anti-creationism, hohum.

However, I believe our current understanding of evolution as likely to be true as the sun rising tomorrow. Everything we have seen supports it and everything we find continues to support it. Thus if we are to enter the OCUK favourite world of 'let's make everything pointless by being pedant' and say 'evolution as we understand it (as a broad principle) may not be correct', then you might as well say 'you cannot say for certain that the sun will rise tomorrow'. Equally pointless and as pseudo-intellectual as it gets.

And here's the part where I could/should post trollface.jpg.. I never mentioned anything about evolution being/not being a religion, only that it has got some blind believers :p

Wouldn't it be much easier just to say It's not certain? But incredibly likely. Nothing is ever certain anyway.

Is evolution a religion?

No. Because a) it is believable and b) can be backed up with historical evidence / facts :o

How sure are you it won't be a giant basket of flowers?

kd

Indeed, it's a troubling though!

It's irritating, because to say it's not certain in everyday language would imply that there is some element of doubt, when in reality there isn't any. It's as certain as it's possible to be certain about it, taking into regard that it's a theory based on observations.

And a set of assumptions taken a priori about how the universe works, don't forget that part.

(disclaimer: This is not intended to diminish science or its value unnecessarily, please don't take it the wrong way)
