7970 specs revealed (Supposedly)

Its all about perception, i read dm's posts and see pretty good estimates. I know they can come across as arrogant and offensive but he makes a lot more sense than most and usually comes in close to the the facts. For this reason a lot of people get offended and dont get the points or just plain take offense.

Point is read his points and try not to take offense which i agree could be hard for a lot of people. Rroff does this well as theres plenty of disagreements but good debate.

I dont see much to prove his theory wrong maybe on the low pricing as i see amd pricing a lot higher but on power draw with the same size die i see power being pretty similar to the 6970 if not a little higher.

I've deleted the slanging match about TDP ;)

Edit:-

TDP is not about direct power draw. It's basically the minimum required cooling power to keep the chip under junction temp under worst case scenarios.

To expand on this, it's a nominal figure used to design the cooler for the card.

above by gurusan and jokester is correct,
drunken master as usual knows nothing and keeps saying whats TDP is NOT and doesnt explain what it actually is.
for gurusan and jokester have given correct info, more detail on TDP can be read here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thermal_Design_Power

TDP = THERMAL DESIGN POWER

merry xmas all.

your not dealing in power consumption watts, but heat output watts.

Aye, hardly makes you feel the festive need to drop £500 on one does it?

£500, holy guacamole. You'd think it would look a darn sight better and have some thought put into cooling for that much money.

Ooooo !!

Just found something really interesting !

I googled Radeon 7970 and top link was a page from Hardware Canucks.. It said under the link "AMD change schedule release for 7970 to 22nd December"

But when I went to the link the page had been removed !

The plot thickens :D

Looks like their boggy standard 11-12" to me.

However, it has been said that OEMs are being given free reign to use their own boards and coolers. Which is good, because it seperates good companies like MSI Asus and Gigabyte from the pony ones who whack on a sticker and call it a day.

I would expect power input to a graphics card to ~equal heat output. conservation of energy, where does the power input go? A tiny amount output from the DVI sockets, a small amount into the fan, the rest goes to heat I expect.

This will make allot of people happy.

Now if it could also do PLP that would be the icing on the cake.

Hmm.. this seems to be about drivers and not specific to the 7 series.
