Question for the Mods and closing threads

This forum seems to have "unwritten rules".
Where is the rule that says no discussion of explosives because I can't find it?

Some of my posts were deleted silently a while back. It's very frustrating as I delete 20 posts for every 1 I write at least. I put a lot of thought into my posts.

'Family friendly' covers a lot of things and everything else is at the mods discretion.

What explosives were you talking about?

I've never pressed F5 so much.

This problem with a lot of posters is they haven't got the brain cells not to go into a thread they don't like but would prefer to say 'Lock this thread', 'Why isn't this thread closed?'.
I've just counted the threads on the first page of GD and there are 17 threads I have zero interest in so I don't waste my time clicking on them.
One poster even said the other day something like "But when I click on GD I still see the thread title" :eek:
I think he was serious.

Basically any time a mod takes an action on an account more serious than a minor edit, or moving a thread we are likely to make a note of it (or try to).

The reason is it lets all the mods track what is going on at a glance, and how often we've had to deal with them.
For example if someone has had 3 name changes (at their request) in a year I may refuse to do another one for 6 months.
Or if someone keeps getting suspended for the same thing we can deal with it differently (IE a longer suspension and a specific warning).

Nope, as Werewolf says it counts for anything other than the most minor of edits. If there's a first instance of swearing then it might be simply noted as a user note initially but that means that if there are subsequent instances then the fact that they've already had posts edited might modify it from being a simple edit again to a short suspension.

Given that moderators have replied in it I'd say you're bang on the money that it has been spotted. However from a quick scan through I'd say the difference between that thread and yours is that you appeared to be asking for advice regarding whether a flu jab would help you (i.e. medical advice) and agnes was asking if it was possible to break a bone without it being immediately obvious. It may seem like a fine point to create a distinction on but closing threads is sometimes down to a judgement call and it's often better to err on the side of caution where it could create issues.

As for the original question it might be nice if all threads that were closed had a message appended to them but sometimes it's not possible - a percentage will be moved to a moderated areas and no trace will be left on the forum so there's no way to highlight why it was removed unless the moderator chooses to post a thread stating what was wrong with it. This would be a very silly idea if the subject of the thread (and hence referred to by the moderator in their new thread) was the offending part of the post.

Sometimes moderators simply don't have time or think it's patently obvious why a thread has required closed - it may have got dozens of RTMs but not everyone is going to know that it has been so contentious so it's helpful for us to try and post a reason. Perhaps the biggest thing is that sometimes we forget, as a moderator there may be several actions that require taken simultaneously including updating user notes, closing the thread, suspending/banning as appropriate, deleting offending posts etc - occasionally in the midst of that a message regarding why the thread was closed is forgotten, mea culpa, sorry folks but it happens.

If you feel strongly about a particular topic or indeed more general matters about the forum then feel free to email a moderator but do remember that they may be busy people too and won't always be able to respond instantly to any queries. For my part I'll try to remember and put a message for threads I close or soft-delete but sometimes I'll no doubt forget.
 
When all said and done, no one is ever going to agree with every decision a mod makes because nothing is as black and white as what some people may think.

We can apply some forethought into what we post and report others for abusing the system. These aren't hard lines rules, just common sense.
 
I'm more intrigued about the user-note system now, and wish to know how many I have :/

OP has 31k posts since 2003, he obviously likes it here and finds it useful, entertaining or only he knows what.

He's making a valid point that boils down to good manners in my eyes, and he asked it in a non uppity way.

I'm going to nominate your for a position as an Evil Don. Jobs a dead cert going off your quoted post :)
