Is there a tablet out there that doesn't need a degree in programming to update and use the latest Os as updates are released.

I want a thin, light 3G tablet for web surfing mainly. What do people suggest?

When is the ipad3 or Prime released?

Prime is out fairly soon and the iPad 3 will be out March/April. You should wait for the latter, though the former isn't bad.

Its simple, Android fans are always gonna say the Prime is better and Apple fans are gonna say the iPad3 is the best.

This is an argument that will go on till the end of time! hehe

Most Android fans I know fully admit the iPad is better. It simply is - not for quite everyone, but certainly for the OP.

I'd quite happily take even an iPad 2 over a Prime. The Prime is all specs but will have all the same problems as the original Transformer.

The iPad 3 will be (hopefully) significantly improved specs coupled with the superior tablet software platform.

You see that's what I mean the argument will never end as I disagree completely, I wouldn't have an iPad over the TF101 never mind the Prime.

The iPad simply doesn't do what I need a my tablet to do.

And that's perfectly fine, I said in the first line it's not for everyone, but overall it is better.

This isn't a discussion about what is better anyway, it's a discussion about what is better for the OP. Someone who sounds like they can't be bothered with any faffing is going to benefit from having an iPad. Quite simple really.

I don't have to fart around with my TF101. It just works. Fair enough if you want 3g and not willing to tether (which is free incidentally on Android rather than being charged monthly for the privilege on iOS) then iPad is the better choice.

Wouldn't fancy having to pay my phone contract + another data contract for my tablet though.

I'd say the ipad, having watched my other halfs mum pick mine up and just start using it after having to talk her through how to read her emails on her laptop for the 5th time I really realised how easy it is to use.

My 6 year old can use my ipad.

I find android a royal PITA, especially the marketplace which is full of free crap. If you're up for tweaking and have some patience you can get decent free apps on android and you definitely have a lot more freedom with it but for just working out of the box with polished apps in a secure ecosystem, iPad all the way.

Oh and the tethering is on the handset not the tablet so it doesn't matter if he gets the ipad or prime.

OP are you really sure you'd use it out of wifi? I had a 3g ipad and traded down to wifi only, it rarely leaves the house but if it does I'm always somewhere near a wifi signal.

"Oh and the tethering is on the handset not the tablet so it doesn't matter if he gets the ipad or prime"

Very true but most who go for ipads tend to already have an iPhone, in which case it would cost to tether. (not sure if jail break lets you tether for free though)

iOS is very smooth and easy i agree. Mainly as it is such a simple interface, so simple it bores me to death.

this seems to be the android v apple debate distilled :)

it depends on whether you think simple is dull and you want more terrain to explore or if you like things to "just work" (and little else :))

I got right into android with flashing my galaxy s and galaxy s2 then realised for me it was like having a homebrew handset, endless possibilities, none of them what I wanted :)

I'm sure with a well built android tablet you won't need to faff about with ROMs etc etc, what does depress me a little is everyones response to the ipad appears to be what PC people always do.. specs, specs and more specs which personally, leaves me cold on what is effectively a handheld browser.

Depends entirely on the network your phone is connected to. 3, for example, doesn't charge extra if you're on The One Plan or have at least All In One 15 on PAYG. I get tethering on 3 PAYG for free.

I had an iPhone 4 for 12 months, actually I had 4 of them because they kept braking but there were loads of things/apps that didn't "JUST WORK" its a load of old Apple spiel cobblers!!

Got annoyed after the 12 months of if you can't beat them join them atitude but soon got bored and signed up to Android.. Not looked back since!!

Ah, the obligatory extreme and ridiculous example. No argument would be complete without one.
