Imagine...........there was no internet

I remember buying public domain discs from adverts in magazines, in fact the mags were a critical source of new software and demos with their coverdiscs.

Encarta and it's ilk - seemed so modern, a whole encyclopedia on a few discs, much easier to search than books, more content.

Looking back it was complete and utter ****ing **** but it's all we had. At least we didn't have facebook and x-factor. For that I am truly thankful.

subtract internet.. add hdtv..

oh my, can you remember the days when we only had standard definition television?

Of course people can remember that, most people still receive the majority of their TV in SD.

or the days before digital broadcasting? when only a few people had sky, and everyone else only had 5 channels to choose from?

Again, not that hard to imagine, you could still watch analog tv until recently. Freeview has only been around for less than 10 years. While undoubtedly a big change, it's still a long way short of the change brought about by the internet, over twice as long ago.

or even, before channel 5, or... before Channel 4!

While at the time they were undoubtedly a fairly big change, I doubt adding 1 extra channel to the tv listings is quite on the scale of the introduction of the internet.

And don't forget colour! oh I remember the day my father brought home our first colour tv..

A better comparison, but still (imo) a long way short of the significant change in the world that has been brought about by the internet.

Very few things have changed the world quite as significantly as the internet has.

The whole UK should have a no-Internet week. Including businesses then we all can feel how it was like. It certainly has changed a lot of things in people's lives. Especially for certain types of businesses.

That would be the worst week imaginable.

Life before the internet sucked. Being able to find out information on pretty much anything using a handheld device is freaking amazing. All we need now are hoverboards and jetpacks.

Just...
NO!
Do you realise how many internet warriors would give up their lives to stop this from happening?

I certainly don't miss those times. Apart from anything else BOREDOM was the biggest problem, alleviated slightly by regular visits to the local pubs. I had more friends and wasn't always at war with my stomach though.

I remember the world without the internet, it was cold and dark and sucked, then in 95 i found free porn and warez and more porn......damn you're all too young to remember the horror of what it was like before, dont take me back there....oh god!

The net is just an aid but shouldn't stop people living. ;)

The internet/cars/Electricity all stop people from living. If the internet went down, then a lot of the economy would completely freeze. Yes people on their own can cope, but as a society the internet is just as important as any other form of technology.

i first got broadband in 2003 but i've had a couple of periods of several months at a time without internet in the last few years and it's easy. it's hard to not use if you have it but when it's not there, you really don't miss it at all. infact, my sleep patterns were so much better without it. :(

Back in late eighties, early nineties my social life looked a lot like you see on early seasons of "Friends". None of us had mobiles, no internet, no pagers, yet we all knew where to meet each other, seen each other every day and actually spent WAY more time with each other than kids do these days. Snappy facts and quick google ups weren't available to hand, but it only made life more interesting, because any news and stories were shared face to face. We didn't suffer from attention disorder and certainly real life conversations weren't paused every few minutes by everyone checking facebook, texts and emails on their phones for something more entertaining.

I had dial up in 1994 and still managed to play Doom online. Spent most of the time on MIRC though.

The usefulness of the internet was very restricted back then, you still went to HMV to find lyrics out and shopping was real shopping.

As a learning tool, the internet is now phenomenal.
