Hard Drive Pricing going up at an alarming rate!!!!

Nope not at all.

Pricing wont ever be "as they were" as both Seagate and WD are increasing minimum profit margin to a point where your drives will cost 20-30% more than they once did and Warranty is being dropped from 5 years to as low as 1 on some lines.

Now whos the silly one :)

Do you have the source for this info (press release or similar)?

Current prices say otherwise, down to £70 for 2TB. The scaremongering panic buying is over.

Lots of people have old stock as they were clever enough to buy many many drives.

OcUK has a number these drives too that are not for sale on site. These are reserved for System integration in most cases as a System makes more money and having them priced lower from time to time benefits the business more than selling one drive.

Yes.

Many news sites covers the Warranty part.

As for the profit area, its to recoup costs, losses and payments to damages (inc down time). Even without a press release this is an obvious business move.

Also may I remind all that talking about competitors regardless of whether or not you mention where is against the forum rules. This is a forum run and owned by a company. Anyone else caught doing this in the future will find themselves with an infraction or worse.

Funny how you can change your argument, it was component shortages, now it's profit margin of the HD manufacturers.

I smell a troll, does it really bother you that much, OCUK are often very helpful and happy to put opinions out there... Andy probably is a but surprised by the 69.99 pricing - as am i - pleasantly.

Lets just enjoy it and hope it is indicative of a crisis coming to an end.

The world would be a boring place if we all shared the same opinions.

Not a troll, just bemused by the words of an OcUK employee which seems to go against the rest of the market, as can also be seen by the OcUK pricing for drives.

I've bought plenty of stuff off OcUK and will continue to do so, but only when they offer competitive pricing, which for HD's they don't atm.

Just buy it elsewhere then mate, im sure OCUK know what they are doing, for all YOU know they are low on drives and are happy to not sell individual drives at the moment - it is christmas remember ;)

Not looking to buy any drives atm, doesn't mean I can't be interested in the price discussion.

Trolling.. Really? Come on stop please before you derail and head further in to that hole.

Component shortages are still there. Google nidec (make motors etc). They have still got shortages which extended into the gentle typhoon range of fans.

All companies effected will be charging more (more profit) to regain losses. If you are as blind to how an economy works as your letting on then I'd suggest paying attention to the news.

Overclockers do not pass on false info. We passed on the shortages news before anyone else and held lower prices for as long as we could to match the increased purchase prices.

A few companies have held back with some drives at prices close to where they were pre-flood as its Christmas. Have you not seen the price of our 2tb seagate XT?

We chose what to put on offer. The customer doesn't. We as a company sell more black drives and performance drives than any other in relation to overall numbers. That's because our customer base wants the best. An F4 2tb is far from the best where performance is concerned, that sort of drive is likely to thrive at a company where the customer base is less in the know.

Now if you want to nit pick then go ahead. It won't get you anywhere other than recognised as a trouble maker.

lol, a trouble maker? for simply disagreeing with your biased view.

There's nothing biased about it. I still have stock I make lots of margin on, I have other lines I make very little. On the lines I make lots on its due to it being old stock. Prices are not coming down. Shops are just making less because of the awful sales some are experiencing this year over Christmas.

That's just how it is.

Stock is valued on a daily basis. Thats real time pricing.

Not to sort of make you look bad, but I was offered brand new OEM 2TB F4's for £70(ish). So there is still some deals out there. Some have spotted locals of the rainforest have this too.

+ if you're like me and its just for storing crap. All is good :)

I find it odd that some customers expect companies to sell their old stock at old prices. 99% of the time, the prices of components come down, and if companies never dropped prices to match their competitors, they'd still have 500MB drives for sale. This time HDD prices have gone up, and it doesn't make sense to sell them for more than it'll cost to replace them.

The general point of a company is to make money, and prices will be set to do that (with the obvious balance of having happy customers etc). Being able to charge more to recoup losses will require their competitors to do the same thing, otherwise charging more will just leave a company priced out.

Hopefully prices will come down soon.
