Buying a new SSD - which one?

I think you can just move the steamApps folder (have a google). The problem is, that means all you steam games. My steam folder is about 170 gig, so I can't put that on an SSD. Once I get my SSD I might just rename my steamApps folder 'backupSteamApps' and copy just a couple of games to the SSD. Play those, then copy them back, keeping just a few at a time on the SSD.

Any ideas if that's a solution or won't work?

Use GameSaveManager or SteamMover to move the games you want on your SSD.

Thanks. Have you tried SteamMover? After googling, I wasn't not sure if it's more clever than just moving the files yourself, although the description here suggests you can keep games across multiple drives and play them all.
...or just copy your stem folder ;)
While it's too big to copy the whole thing, does it work as well as using SteamMover (ie, all games working even when on different drives)?

SteamMover essentially moves the entire game folder from steam apps to another hard drive and leaves a junction in its place pointing to where the new location of the game files are on the other hard drive.

This means you can just start the game in steam and it will know where to look for the files.

You can do this manually with a bit of research or just use the program for simplicity.

This site suggests that you don't have to move the entire folder, but you can choose which games to have on which drive. It also says you can select to run the command lines yourself, so you might not need to worry about sharing your steam password.

Re-read my post. I said entire game folder, meaning individual games, not the entire steamapps folder. I suppose I could have made what I meant clearer.

I've used GameSaveManager before, that's one I know is safe but SteamMover apparently is too, the advantage is you only need to move certain games, you can keep games you don't play much are ones which won't benefit from an SSD on your mechanical.

Ah, gotcha, thanks.

Sweet. All I need now is a 120gb drive at about £110 (there have been £120 deals since October) or the 128 m4 for £1/gb :D

I think Crucial M4 128GB is for me then ;)

Now to buy a decent SATA III Mobo!

I installed one this morning and having not had an SSD before nothing to compare it with, but just wow in terms of impact. 70% new parts in machine and what I am noticing is the performance of the HDD more than anything else.
