How I kept calm I'm not sure...

Are those GoPro HD Hero2 cameras good then? I fancy something that can be mounted and can record external car videos properly without overwhelming the microphone with wind noise

People who accelerate when you overtake are idiots as are those who feel the need to give you full beam when you do a rapid overtake, clean and without intimidation, usually old sods with boxes of tissues on the back shelf, had one couple of day back. Perfectly clean if rapid overtake of a car plodding along at 40mph on a 60mph road holding up loads of cars. We get to a nice bit of wide road and I open the taps only to have dead man walking flashing his lights over and over. Eeejits.

The ones coming towards you flashing, they infuriate me, if there wasn't enough room to pull out and overtake I wouldn't pull out and overtake. Flashing their lights isn't going to help me overtake safely, *****.

Had this happen once to me too and coincidentally it was also when driving an MX5 :p

I feel the North East has received a lot of bashing due to ross26, most of the roads around where I live are rural and unlit and I use high beams as much as possible.

I suggest you head over to FFOC and find the many threads discussing this issue...

I found it an issue.

Hi. Ex MK1 Focus driver here.

It was never an issue. Ever. And I drove at night on unlit roads extensively. Switching to full beam didn't give you a 50 yard dead zone. At most you got about 6 feet of dark area directly in front of the bumper. It certainly didn't compromise visibility in the way you make out. If it did, the car would have been recalled on safety grounds.

Putting the full beam on gives the same light output as dipped. Just without cut off at the top. Did you seriously think that the two beams were designed not to overlap?

Also, if the 'problem' was rectified on the MK1.5, why does my friends 07 Fiesta ST have the same setup?

How can't I see ahead of me? My headlights give me excellent head up light. All high beams offer IMO is seeing things above the level of the dipped beams.

As a fact which is interesting and I would like to hear the views of everyone in regards to this. A MK1 focus when the main beam is activated turns off the dipped beam to produce the high beam, this resulting in no light for the first 50 yards or so? Safe? I think not.

while i agree that full beam = turned off dipped beam resulting in less light close to you, i disagree its 50 yards. Maybe a car length at most.

If you are driving a unlit road at night, normal dipped beam doesn't give you enough range to see whats coming at 60mph. By the time its in the headlights its too late to brake.

This always makes me laugh, I pull back in safely and then wave at them with a bit smile on my face as if I know them and they are trying to say hello.

Why would you NOT use your full beam on an unlit road at night when there is no oncoming traffic? I cannot think of a single reason why you would deliberately restrict the amount of vision you have by not using all your available, legally appropriate lighting

You can see further with full beam, why wouldn't you want that

Have you ever been full beamed mate? On a town road? You'd understand then perhaps as you'd probably go into something.

Do a bit of travelling around the A14, at night the carriageway is pitch black, so see a lot of people using the full beam (normal is fine to me but I don't know), however, I always see others on the opposite side of the road, usually the HGV flash his lights for that reasn I guess?

and NO, there isn't anyone in front or behind the HGV for a good distance!

looks like I missed an epic thread here lol

i thought that too, then i realised it was started on christmas eve. and although epic thread was epic, it's not as epic as christmas eve.

and anyway, OP was speeding so it's all null and void. him and the civic owner should go for a milkshake together.
