Upsides to PC gaming - debating converting

Had the problem with Rage, Deus Ex and FM 2012. game shops get the games to you 1-3 days early but you can't install it let alone play it when it requires steam activation. it's just a pain that you don't have to put up with on console.

You mean it's a pain you can't play a game when you shouldn't be able to?

I just got my son an Xbox 360 for Christmas, this is my first console after 18 years of PC gaming and my initial thoughts were (read as opposite for PC advantage):

-Resolution looked bad on my 40 in TV (I have a second older ATI 4890 based media centre/gaming pc on the same TV which looks great)
-Long load times in some games (wasn't expecting this)
-Textures were low quality
-BF3 controls with 360 pad were terrible compared to PC
-for all the PC is more expensive it seems I need to buy an endless amount of hardware add-ons for the xbox e.g. hard drive, which all add up
-Have to pay to play on line!

I then spent a day congratulating myself on PC gaming until I tried Red Dead Redemption: undead nightmare, which I love!

Overall, the xbox gaming seemed of a much lower quality than PC gaming

One disadvantage of the PC, a general lack of split screen games if that's your thing.

The only benefit of a console is the console exclusive games. Everything else is done the same or better on PC.

This. The only reasons PS3 is on my table are Uncharted 3/Dark Souls.

Everything else is much better and more enjoyable on PC.

When I compare my tweaked modded 60fps Skyrim to what console gamers get...I laugh.

You have just found the only reason to own a console, Red Dead Redemption.

Mods, Graphics, Get to use either Kb+M OR 360 pad so best of both worlds, nicer online environment compared to my experience of 360 online, wider array of genres (MMO, RTS, Sim) you could counter that by saying that consoles have music and dance games but tbh I dont particularly enjoy them.

The only things consoles have over PC are: Price, Split screen, Some exclusives (Games like GT5/Forza don't count because we have CARS so suck it).
Everything else PC does as well or better.

Totally agree to this. I also like having a huge aluminium black box on my desk which looks much more expensive than any console will ever look so it's the hardware side which i prefer as well such as a nice keyboard, nice big desk, fancy mouse and mat, 5.1 speakers etc etc.

There is also the internet side of it. I do a lot of typing on various forums and watch a lot of HD youtube videos. If i had an xbox only, i would ideally need a separate laptop to play games and surf the web to a high standard. Might as well get a pc and roll it all into one.

The satisfaction of having immediate access to the best exclusives on both sides is enough for me. That's not even to bring into consideration the fact that the PC is far and away ahead of consoles in terms of strategy and RPG gaming.

A PC and an Xbox 360 or PS3 is all any gamer needs. If you want to stretch it out and hit the Nintendo Wii and DS / 3DS side of things, you'll find a good few gems over there as well. None of it is to be scoffed at... ultimately, it's the gaming experience that counts and no one thing can do it all.

For me, I always gamed on pc for years. Mods, better audio\graphics, mouse/keyboard FPS multiplayer (no crappy console auto aim for me please, so sad watching people game on console and miss by miles and still be credited the kill :D) Strategy games, endless catalog of games that can be played. Games are much cheaper to buy etc, much more benefits.

Mods alone are huge reason alone to have a pc to game, even though developers are now trying to bring mods to console via software which we will probably start seeing in future game releases. Modding also has been dieing out somewhat, developers not releasing tools or making it hard to mod, BF3 for example, wont see any overhauls like you did in BF1942 etc anymore. Pretty much when the whole DLC thing started up they knew they had to stop modding as most of the modders can make better content than DLC for free, which wouldn't be good for business, unless you can offer the user content for a fee and take a cut from the sale, which is exactly what they're now trying to do.

I do miss out on games I wanted though, Red Dead was one I wanted to play, BS that it can't be ported to PC, probably some exclusive paper work crap.

I am a kid here....

PC is generally awesome than that clunky pad console gamers have to use but I must admit sometimes the pad is better on games like 360. I am able to buy games cheaper and the community is nice and friendly as long as you aren't a massive idiot or douche :p

Regreted building my pc at first, even tried selling it but I'm warming to it now. Graphics, framerate and flexability in terms of tweaks and mods is unrivaled. Games are cheap but offset by the expensive hardware imo The pc can do a ton of other useful things besides running games too of course.

Shouldn't be able to? It isn't my fault the stores send them out early, as far as I'm concerned if I've paid money and I'm holding the game I should be able to play it, just like you have always been able to until Steam came along.

pros

better aim and control with M+K
better graphics (if you want them)
sometimes the DLC is free
pc games get patches and updates earlier than console 90% of the time
mods
better audio
pc games are cheaper
MMOs

cons

a lot of the really good games never make it to pc

Pros
Higher res
Better graphics ( helped by res but you got AA and AF to play with along with other things)
Smoother gameplay
Mouse..
Controll freedom..most game pad, wheels etc all work on a PC
Better audio to a degree( if you inveast in it)
PC games tend to be cheaper
lastly mods

Cons
Expesnive!
a lot of messing around ( booting up etc)
as above stated a few great games don't make it to PC ( or when they do they are ****)

Can't really see it as a 'pain' or disadvantage over console though as when a release date is set you should expect it at that date and not before it.

Upsides?

Cheaper games, better sales, community support, MODS, variety and flexibility, high resolution (I mean come on, I game at a four times higher resolution than console gamers), better visuals, computers can be used for a thousand other things than gaming - gives me the comfort (or pain) of not leaving my chair the entire day, strategy, indie, tycoons, RPGs, simulators, addons, free DLC, control over the machine, upgradability, etc.
