Does anyone believe in Heaven or Hell? If so, why?

If you don't, why do you believe the concepts were created?

:)

I'm not religious and don't really believe, but I work in a catholic school and have to pick my words carefully.

Saying that I've always had this view. When you die your life 'flashes before you'. At this point you relive everything you have done. So if you did bad things then its a horrible experience or 'hell', if you did good things its a pleasant experience or 'heaven'.

I've seen Black Sabbath but I would have liked to have seen Heaven and Hell aka Dio and Sabbath lol.

On a more serious note,

My grandad said something I found really interesting on the subject of heaven.

Basically, my gran died before I was born and he found another women, but never married, both women made my grandad very happy, but when he dies, does he go to my gran or this other women? and does this other women go to him or her first husband?

Kind of made the next few minutes very awkward and quiet, but made me think about it

Someone asked Jesus a very similar question in the Bible. He said that in heaven there is no "marriage".

Obviously, this is a purely Christian viewpoint, and your mileage may vary if you are a Muslim, Jew, Hindu, Wiccan, scientologist, atheist or just an idiot looking for another religious argument.

I don't have any particular belief in heaven or hell but equally they might exist, it's just not something that I concern myself with really. At the point where it might be an issue it's probably too late for me to do anything about anyway so I'm not going to worry myself unduly.

Your second question looks rather leading to me but I'll give you a few possible answers anyway. The concept of heaven or hell may have been created to instil a code of moral behaviour. The concept may have been made to offer a form of comfort that there will be a reckoning beyond just this life - good people go to heaven and bad people go to hell. Maybe they weren't simply "created", they both exist in some form or another - my belief or disbelief in them don't necessarily affect whether they are real so to ask whether one would consider them created is a bit like asking "so when did you stop beating your wife?", the question presupposes a particular type of answer.

So heaven or hell would last a couple of minutes then before nothingness if I'm understanding you correctly? I don't think that's a viewpoint I've ever heard before.

This life where you are now is either Heaven or hell it changes constantly minute to minute day to day.

Any other idea of heaven or hell hasn't been proven to exist so there fore at this moment in time it doesn't.

It was used as a "bogey man" will get you type threat by religious orders through out history to make you do as they told you , TOLD as in not asked .

Over time it's become that much a part of culture that it's become real in the minds of a lot of people, media and human history.

Armys conquer the flesh, churches conquer the mind..

My quick 2 minute view on it anyway..

I don't believe in spirits, but heaven would be a pretty awful place. Imagine living for 100 years, then 1000, and then try to imagine a million years. Eternity is even longer than that. What could you possibly do to keep yourself interested in existing for all that time? And what would the point be if you had no goals to achieve, like building shelter, hunting/gathering/farming food? And imagine how terrible it must be for famous people - there would be millions of spirits constantly wanting to meet Elvis, Marilyn Monroe, Einstein etc (assuming they had all gone to heaven). And heaven would be filled with the spirits of dead foetuses and babies who have died over the millenia, and assuming everyone magically speaks a common heavenly language, what would these spirits possibly have to talk about since they never lived a life on Earth? And what if some annoying friend or relative found you in heaven, how would you escape them for eternity? And would you even be allowed to say "**** off!" in heaven?

Woohoo....here we go again.....

For people who profess no interest in or a dislike of religion or spirituality they certainly like talking about it all the time.....I wonder why that is?

As in tastes nice or you want to spit it out ? :)

I'd go out on a limb and suggest that it is a doubt vonhelmet is expressing, it's often said but still worth repeating it seems - absence of evidence is not evidence of absence. You're probably trying to apply Occam's Razor here when it's purely a scientific principle (and unfortunately a much abused one in the arena of theology) which doesn't mean much when taken outwith that particular area.

MY answers are a) No, see B and b) to encourage people to do things that whichever orders wanted them to at the time.

This is only my personal opinion.

So what heaven is just a big orgy? sounds like hell to some people

That's not what I said at all. Don't be a dumbass.

The point is that there are no relationships that are more special than any others, as we will all love everyone. And no, we're not back to orgies, you pervert.
