Exactly what i was thinking..
according to the OP he was sitting well below the speed limit in NSL when the OP went to pass.
there is NEVER a justification for accelerating when someone is trying to complete an overtake.
I'm sure we've all had something similar at some point, there's far too many cretins allowed to live (or drive).
I was following a jag on a fairly straight NSL road with good visibility, when we both get stuck behind a focus doing about 40, the road ahead of him is clear. The jag overtakes, I wait for a couple of cars to pass in the opposite direction, then go to overtake, the focus decides this is a good point to accelerate up to 70!

I had exactly this happen to me a fortnight ago, when i was in a courtesy X1 2 litre diesel....i felt I was too far forward to give up though (was only a few inches of my car that would clip his) and just about managed to squeeze infront before passing a Transit on the other side (who for the record didnt seem interested in slowing down either!)
It's an overtake I make all the time on a road I drive a few times a week, was the best part of 3/4 of a mile clear and the idiot was doing 35 before he took offense to me overtaking, and I pulled back in touching on 3 figures. Would've been fine in the 335D, it was only a Mk4 mondeo TDCI!!!
Made me very angry, but at the same time thankful I didn't die. I had already made the decision that if i was going to crash i was taking the mondeo with me instead of a head on though.

I find a lot of the time when you go to pass someone (safely of course) it often wakes them up as they're not expecting it and take offense to this for some reason
The only occasion that I can think of where a similar thing as the OP happened to me was when traveling back from Devon. Road went from single carriageway to dual and the VW Toureg in front (Diesel V10) decided he didn't want to do the speed limit so I went to overtake after the roundabout and he booted (almost suffocated on the black smoke).
Like I say, not the same position as the OP due to there not being the risk of on-coming traffic, but it really does baffle me as to why people have the urge to do this

It would have been quicker and safer to brake and get back in behind the Mondeo.
TBH, watching that video really felt like de-ja vu.
Something unbelievably similar happened to me but in daytime about 4 years ago when i had a car full of people too. I still feel now that while the guy (same in this case) was a total clown, i felt responsible for even falling for it knowing that such idiots do indeed exist and theres always that chance. In my case i was in a normal car and he was in a normal car so i didn't immediately have that "alarm bell" feeling that you'd get if it was a CTR but i was more naive about it and didn't handle it as smoothly as you did but fortunately well enough to make sure there was no accident.
That incident has made me so so so much more cautious of everything ever since. I can't say i've ever overtaken a car since without it coming back to me like it was yesterday.

I tend to overtake as quickly as fast as I can....keep accelerating until I can pull back in with plenty of space. None of this cruise past at half throttle business! The less time spent on the wrong side of the road the better frankly!
I think I get more of a reaction doing this though, normally from those people who sit 15mph under the speed limit on long straights and beep and flash at anyone who dares to pass, partly as my exhaust is far from quiet up near 7000 rpm! The bangs on fast upshifts at high revs probably don't help

In order to realise there is an idiot beside you in a Civic Type-R who has decided to nail the throttle, apply more power, and then leave him like he's going backwards in order to slot in front safely whilst he has foot nailed down, you don't need 'enough' power, you need biblical levels of power.
The power differential to do that needs to be absolutely huge!
Assuming you are not pootling past you do not need BIBLICAL levels of power. Yes, if you cruise past in a sub-optimal gear, not expecting a tard to speed up requiring a downshift to occur you would need a crap load more power to make a difference in a short enough distance.
I never overtake like that though. As stated, why spend more time on the wrong side of the road then expected, even if they are doing 15 I'll nail it past asap and get back in. Should not HAVE to but yeah....scum in CTRs....
It was more a thinking out loud statement anyway in the context of "Why do you need XXX BHP when you can only do 70mph". This is one of those scenarios where biblical 'unnecessary' power is useful.

this is why i love bikes !! by the time the daft cager has seen me im past and 100 yards up the road !! . I have had issues in the past overtaking in the car but only once have i had to slow down and pull back in but i think it was more my fault than theres

The way he cut off the corner after the 'defence' i'm not sure i would want to try and carry on that overtake.
