Is it worth spending money on gaming mice and keyboards?

I agree with the first part of your statement but that last part should actually be that any DPI over the native DPI of the sensor+lens combo is a gimmick. Also strictly speaking you should always use the native DPI of your mouse and adjust sense in game for best results.

Never heard of native DPI for a sensor, so can't comment (you might be making it up :p) but my point was that no one should ever need above 800 dpi, apart from in extreme cases, where people use 1600/1800. You simply don't need higher sensitivity than that. It's a gimmick because DPI is the highest advertised aspect of a mouse when in reality it makes no difference what-so-ever. Most people seem to think higher DPI makes the mouse more preside and accurate :p which is of course, completely false.

Couple of questions regarding the Filco's:

Why do people go for the "tenkeyless" versions over the ones with the numbpad; I find the numbpad pretty useful.

Do I go for:

Tactile action
Click action
Linear action

?

I like the tenkeyless version because of the size of the keyboard :) It means that the mouse can be closer to the keyboard which is more comfortable for me. The size of my Filco is the 2nd best thing about it for me. Behind the switches of course :p

About the key type, up to you. I have Brown which are tactile, and love them for any type of usage, but I haven't tried linear, I might prefer them, who knows.

It's all personal preference. Read as much as you can about it and try the different types if possible.

My opinion:

Gaming mice are essential for FPS games that are online - Battlefield, Modern Warfare etc.
Gaming keyboard is not as important, as a decent normal one will do. I have an MS Sidewinder X6 and have never used any of the macro buttons, but I do like the backlit keys.

I have two keyboards and the tenkeyless is only for gaming and I dont think I have ever used the numpad for gaming. If it will be your only keyboard then get the regular one as you don't realise how much you use the numpad outside of gaming till you don't have one.

Every sensor has a native DPI and that is the DPI at which it will be best used at. you cannot just say "everyone use 800" as that will only apply to some mice. Its similar to monitor resolution. If you don't run your monitor at the native res then things look rubbish. Same with mice sensors, the further from the native DPI you go the worse the sensor will perform.

For example the ADNS-A9500 laser sensor in my sensei and in people's G500 or G9x has a native DPI of around 5000 so having it set high and turning down the sensitivity in game will yield better tracking than turning the mouse DPI down to 800. Although with various firmware you can do good steps of DPI so on the Sensei anything between 90 and 5670 in steps of 90 will perform well.

All I am trying to say is you cannot prescribe a DPI for everyone it depends on the mouse.

Yes, but the point is they have designed the sensors in these mice to have high DPI as a marketing point. Using a mouse with a "native DPI" of 5000 and setting the ingame / windows sens lower does not have any advantage over using a mouse with a "native DPI" of 400 and setting the ingame / windows sens higher.

I use a WMO with 450 DPI and use in game sensitivity at what people would call low. If I set the in game sens high even with only 450 DPI it would be too sensitive for me. I game with 35cm / 360.

You're on a computer hardware forum and you need to look at your keyboard to type?

Yup! :p :D

- You don't need blacklit keys or any WOO FLASHY LIGHTS!!1 Have you ever used a backlit keyboard? They are actually very good especially if you like to game late at night and not have lights turned on at stupid hours in the early morning/late night. They also make it much much easier to see the letters on the keys, more so the laser etched keys Yes, I've used a keyboard with backlit keys and stand by what I said. If you can touch type there isn't a need for them, and I doubt anyone who's looking to buy a "gaming" keyboard will have to look at the keyboard to use it :p Also I don't use my PC in the dark.. it's not good for your eyes.

Well tbph it doesn't add that much to the price anyway, and as said above yes I need to look at the keys when typing and playing games (sometimes :p)

I got my saitek eclipse 2 for around 25£ IIRC from the purple store and you have a choice of red, blue and even PINK for the keys! :D :p

Plus it actually got excellent reviews on sites and the guys preferred it to the logitech G15 IIRC

On the subject of mechanical keyboards, anyone any thoughts on

"Classic 104 Keys Mechanical Gaming Typing USB Keyboard for Windows XP/Vista/7" at £30?

American reviews seem to give a decent amount of praise.

The switch type looks weird, look like blue Alps switches  They are certainly not a typical cherry switch, probably some cheap re-make, it will probably be rubbish, but who knows :p

But the point is DPI is irrelevant. You should look at things like acceleration, jitter and tracking with sensors NOT DPI. Also a comfortable mouse is very important too, although a comfortable mouse with a rubbish sensor is still a terrible mouse.

That's exactly what I'm saying? I know DPI is irrelevant, hence it is a marketing gimmick, which was my original point :p

People buy mice simply because they see the high DPI stat and go "Wow, awesome mouse 9000 DPI?" Which is why I said "You don't need over 9000 DPI" in my initial post. The fact remains that you don't need over a sensor with over 800 DPI, but the devs try to increase the DPI on their sensors to sell more mice to clueless people instead of focusing on what matters.

But I'm glad to see that you agree :)

Best mouse ever :)

I've just got a new mechanical keyboard and I have to say that it is a huge step up from my old 'gaming' one. Cherry red switches are quite nice to use, even though I'm not used to the keyboard yet. The only problem now is that I really don't want to be stuck on my rubbish one in work... :S

Ah yes I see now we just approached the same conclusion from different directions.

I love my Logitech G15 Keyboard, and G7 Mouse. I have had them since they were first released, which is about 7-8 years for the G15, and apart from the usual worn keys, its still going strong. No complaints for the Mouse either, still in perfect working order. :)

I had the exact same problem after I got my Filco. I bought I Compac MX11800 off ebay for £18 for work :) It was a bargain.

lol no worries.

Cheers for the tip. I'll have a look into that :)

You're welcome. I'll admit also that before I got the Compac, I was taking my Filco to work every day to use. Yes, I'm that sad. (and no I couldn't leave it there because then I couldn't use it at home :p)
