Would you join a gaming/tech group?

Sounds like the sort of thing you’d do when at school. With the availability of so many good technical forums there isn’t much point apart from meeting up for a few drinks.

So far got about 12 people interested and ready to meet up.

However going by what you've all said we are going to set up a forum for general chit chat and then have 1 or 2 meets a month.

It may epically fail but meh its worth a go and could be fun :)

Shock as computer enthusiasts prefer to stay at home on their computer over meeting new people in real life!

Seriously though, I think its a cool idea. I'd like it if ocuk had local "chapters" where you could meet up and socialise, exchange gear, help eachother out, and generally enhance the experience you get from the forum. It'd also be interesting to see if that changed the dynamic of the forum as more people would know eachother or recognise them as being part of a particular group. You could have meets that were themed by the subforums (eg GD night would just be a **** up, pc gaming would be a lan meet) :p

Plenty of us have gone to meets and don't mind meeting IRL.
However groups for tech talk offer nothing anymore. Infact they are far worse. They are not rich media. At a group, you can't instantly link to spec sheets, reviews, pictures or such prices. Ŷou don't have an audience of hundreds of people. So on and so forth.

There are meets. Its up to people to organise them. Why don't you organise 1? I'm not sure why people claim its so hard to organise 1, its not hard in the slightest. Get going!

I don't see the point for this sort of discussion, this forum is a much better medium.

(Just to make a point, I have nothing against meeting "real" people. I have been on many forum meets before, but they had a purpose (e.g. bmx meets when i was younger).)

This is the problem, too many people want to engage only online and not meet up with anyone in the 'real world'.

The suggestion the OP is making is pretty valid.

.

That just isn't the case, theres been loads of meets. GT meets, rolling road, Christmas, karting meet is coming up. They all offer something though.

What does a technology discussion group offer?
Irl you can't even google for information, links, pictures, prices, articles, comparisons and videos.

It's not that people have lost social skills. It's that the Internet is a far better medium to discuss many things. Especially when it's a pure discussion and nothing else.

I personally don't think meeting in person would work well for the context of what the OP is suggesting.

A little alteration would help that. I mean, there is meets for other stuff but you don't see many LAN parties or get together events like IT used to be.

More suggestions would be good. It doesn't have to be just games and technical discussions. Potentional to swap hardware or just general get together.

Thats the thing though, people use Google to present answers to other users of this forum. I bet in real life this scenario would be scary....

I would say a lot of people have lost social skills. There was a thread on 'how much do you stay in the house' and I was shocked at the responces.

And you reAlly think older generations wt out More, wIth less money and longer working hours. Of course they didn't. They stayed home and listened to the wireless.

Scary in what way? The Internet opens up a huge amount of information, which you just can't access or present IRL.

This.

What's wrong with some geeks in a pub debating such topics. I am open to all suggestions but so far got a dozen people interested which isn't bad imho

It's not just applying to the older generation here. It's all ages. Don't be agest now.

Yes, the Internet opens a whole new ballgame. Things don't have to be present IRL to enjoy yourself. The Internet enhances communication but the world is lacking 'groups' how it was a long time ago.

I hate the word 'geek' lol it sounds so sleezy!

@geon106, more suggestions need to come about. It might be wise to make a list of pro's / con's to this whole debate. I think it would be good but thats IMHO.

!

it's not lacking groups, there's millions of groups out there. But with new means of communications. Some groups work better with these new techs and as such they have died out. Where activity based groups are still going strong.

I understand what your saying but it's nice to have suggestions about these things. People can still post on the forum and discuss things.

I dunno it's just different really. I don't want to be the one known as someone 'online' that's a very sad lonly life someone must be living if they don't want to even go out of the house.

It's a chance for people to make new friends.

how do you jump to that. It's nonsense. Becuase people use a forum, they never go out, lol what.

Yeah it's difference in a better way you have info avilable.

IRL
