Basically this has happened to me apart from wanting to take out a mortgage.

http://www.guardian.co.uk/money/2011/feb/19/credit-score-mobile-phone-mortgage

Closed an account with o2 in June 2011, left some 8.25 to be paid running in the background.

Did a credit check today and found some 5 late payment markers ! Logged into my o2 account and paid the bill immediately and then thought WTF.

Number of emails from o2 since closing the account - 0
Number of letters from o2 since closing the account - 0

I'm such an idiot. I wish they atleast sent an email or letter saying there was an overdue sum in these last 6 months.

Just got off the phone, there is nothing they can do obviously.

FML.

It's really principle, it's a bit like blackmail, but it isn't as they aren't chasing you.

I'm actually in shock they would do this.

They don't chase up closed accounts outstanding payments, no instead they just late mark you on your credit in the background.

Well you could argue that they have not acted responsibly as a creditor I suppose, pay the money and ask if they can remove the hits on your credit file. Worth a try.

So if I understand correctly, you didn't pay what you owed, and now you are mad with them for putting a late payment on your credit 'file'?

Contact the credit report company. They will remove or adjust things like this at their discretion or even as good will when it is an obvious flaw in 'the system' or even a minor mistake on your part with over-the-top consequences.

I'm confused by the:

It seemingly comes across as he knew he had amount to be paid, but then forgot about it.

He's talking about O2. Not himself there. That's how I read it anyway.

When you close the account you have to give 30days notice, in that 30days you might go into a new billing month or use above your contract. So you should get a final bill, but that doesn't appear to have happened.

Well that does indeed clear things up a little, I read it as he knew it left something to pay, but then either forgot or just didn't pay.

Nope, I didn't know there was an 8.25 to be paid at all. If I did I would have paid it.

It's almost a "suck on this *****, this is for leaving us."

I previously had an 02 contract (still have broadband) and got a mortgage offer recently so started to panic. Quick call to 02 and I owe the pricey sum of £0 :D

I'm pretty sure that O2 cannot close an account with an outstanding balance and then put a marker on your credit file.

It's the same sort of law that protects you from having a default put on your credit file, lenders have a legal responsibility to give you warnings.

Call them up and and ask to speak to a manager, or better yet, lodge a complaint.
