Have the ATI drivers improved since the game was released?

My set up could manage it on ultra, but I can feel the difference between ultra and high in terms of fps.

If the drivers have improved I might try again..

The 12.1 preview drivers along with the latest cap provide excellent performance in all games. I saw a graph from a website (i forget the link ) but it showed a selection of the current games and the 12.1's added a couple of fps on every game listed when compared to other recent ati drivers.

It wasn't fun - first time I'd got to play with you guys for quite a while, and I bailed after about 10 minutes. I don't get enough time on an evening to waste it on un-fun games where I can't seem to move without getting hammered by the chopper etc.

Ended up on some German server, fighting tooth-and-nail in a good squad, for pride on one scraggy end of Wake Island, loved it :D

I had fun :D

No need to keep going on about it please Jim. I don't want to have to keep reading your digs at me.

Sorry dude, I just get bitter about that sort of thing, you did perm ban me after all.

I will refrain.

It's good you have installed that server add-in, being balanced while alive is no fun, especially not in a situation like that, leaving it up to a server add-in removes any sort of human decision which negates any sort of issue like this.

On a better note, recently invested in the Asus Sonar Xense + Sennhesier 350 bundle on ocuk, and WOW the sound is amazing.

Altho initially I was a bit underwhelmed with the positional audio, I have no gone into the BF3 options and disabled the option for enhancing 3d audio, my sounds now seem more punchy and the directional is 100% better, I even find myself being able to pick out the position of enemy planes from my pilots seat :)

Good tip there for anyone using a decent pair of surround sound capable cans.

I don't expect it to run at low settings, low fps on a 6950.

Plus I only said the above as it was obvious he thought I was trolling.

That makes more sense than comparing performance against BF2. I'm sure there are 6950 owners in here who can help out. I've only got an old GTX295 so not much use in that regard I'm afraid!

Must be somthing wrong with your card i reckon mate my 1gb 5770 manages a mixture of med/high no msaa motion blur off, sbao settings averaging 40fps.

.

Good. This was the sort of response i was waiting for. Its amazing how you can look at something differently after a good nights kip.

I wasn't expecting you to grovel its just hard to remove banning you when hostilities were stilll at a premium.

Anyway, ill remove the ban, regardless of whether you decide to come back or not. ;)

New dawn, new day and all that malarky.

caps are not for single cards tho right?

Using MSI Afterburner OSD GPU usage is at 60-70% so I'm thinking that I might just be getting CPU bottlenecked. If that's the case I really need that i5-2500K upgrade so I'm not held back and I can make full use of my PCIE 2.0 card (current mobo is PCIE 1.0).

No caps are for single cards as well. I was told this by a beta tester at rage3d (ati unoffical forum)

Quite often caps will contain tweaks/optimizations. I used them with my single 6950 and now i have crossfire with no problems.

I would highly recommend a cpu upgrade, that's your bottleneck.

I'm running an i5 2600k at 4ghz with 6870 in crossfire, and I run at ultra (AA turned off) at vsync capped 60fps.

With a single 6870 I get around 45fps with the same settings, so your card should be more than capable.

I was playing at 1400ish resolution on the E6600, with everything at it's lowest. On the Q6600 I'm playing at 1920x1200 with medium settings, and it's smoother than 1400ish on the E6600. :)

What GFX card are you running? I've got a Q6600 running at 3.6Ghz but only a GTX295. I've been thinking about picking up a 560 Ti but need to look into things more. Not sure how far I can go before the cpu becomes a bottleneck, it's done me proud or 3 years! I'd be running at 1920x1080 so should limit any bottleneck...

Oops, forgot to add my rig in my sig. (wahayy )

Added.

Signature won't show for some reason but here it is:

Asus M4N68T
AMD Phenom II X2 560 BE
Asus ATI Radeon HD 6950 DirectCU II 2GB
Corsair Builder Series CX 600W V2
4GB Corsair XMS 1600Mhz (2x2GB)
Generic 500GB HDD
Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit

Very much your CPU. Most BF3 benchmarks used the scripted events of campaign mode and even those show that dual core CPU's struggle. Muliplayer is far more CPU intensive.

With a 3.6Ghz Q6600 and 2GB GTX560ti I could get near 100% GPU usage in MSI afterburner at Ultra, however as I dropped to high and medium the game ran a little faster while GPU usage dropped down to ~60% on big maps with lots of players @medium once you got into the built up areas and into the action.

You've got a good card, you need to improve the CPU. Ideally an i5 2500k but if you need to control costs, a quad phenom preferably clocked should help significantly.

pick up a sec hand 955 or x6 cheap if budget limits should play fine on it and most clock well . bf3 is gpu limited so if you get a decent quad it will be as limited as the fastest quad.
