I think you'll be surprised.. I'm running Server 2008 R2 with ADDS, DNS, FS, IIS(HTTP&FTP), WDS, SQL and Hyper-V with 1 Windows 7 VM and it's coping perfectly. Granted it's not under any sort of load but I doubt most home servers will be.

Ah nice one, well my current server which has just given up the ghost was my file/media server which was also my test web server for presenting websites to clients. So I'll be running HTTP/FTP servers and PHP/MySQL.

Since it's just for testing, there's only ever be one or two people accessing the web servers at a time, so there's not going to be any heavy load.

It's just I'll be moving from my old 2GHz to a 1.5GHz, but I'm sure I won't notice the difference.

For those of you running WHS 2011 - I have a question:
What AV are you using? I was using Vipre client but I found that the Server crawled to a halt when completing a scheduled scan. This was after a recent program update.
Shame as a reseller I get free keys.
I have installed trial version of Avast for WHS 2011 but have no intention of paying what appears far too much to keep it for more than 60 days.

The only slightly annoying thing about the micro server is the power for me.

The reason being I use it as a media server primarily but I re-endcode all my stuff using the Handbrake CLI on linux in a script. It takes so long that unless I leave it over night I have to copy the file to my main PC, encode it any copy it back again. To give my an idea by [email protected] will do a 720P in about 40 minutes. It's about 8 hours on the micro server!

I appreciate most people won't be doing that and for ESXi I can happily run a fair few VM's without any problem but I would have paid extra for a better processor.
 
I use my Microserver just for storage, any re-encoding is done a my main PC which has infinitely more grunt.

You can't have it all, low power usage and almost silent operation obviously means the Microserver is lacking in grunt.

I think your missing the main point - microserver

I does the job it was designed for with elegent ease and is quiet and not very thirsty on the leccy bill when left on 24/7.

If your willing to pay extra for a better processor your moving into a different product area completely and made the wrong choice :D

Thanks for getting back to me but Im not sure what you mean by the above? Do you mean I should install something on my server that works like exchange and all emails and calendars are stored on the server?

Also, should I look to upgrade the RAM? If so to how much for my fairly basic use?

I've got it installed and configured to wake up for diffrent clients but is says hibernate is not supported on this machine :confused:

look at post 2997... seems to work with WHS ok but you have to set it up exactly right

Can anyone confirm if this RAM will work in the N40L? The description for the N40L states ECC RAM but the above RAM is non-ECC

You can't mix the 2 together

ie fill the vacant slot with 1 DIMM of the Kingston alongside the ready fitted 1 ... which is why a lot of people buy 2 at the same time and upgrade to 8GB

If you look back far enough you'll see all sorts of reported working non-ECC RAM sets :)

Ah ok thats makes sense, I saw a couple of references to non-ECC not working in the new N40L but it was probably referring to not mixing them. For the price I will probably just upgrade to 8GB of the above Kingston RAM.

Now, last thing before I order everything...HDDs. Should I use the 250GB drive that comes with the server for the OS and put in something like a 2TB drive for the files? I dont know if I should be setting it up with RAID which presumably means I need 2 drives of the same size? What benefit will instlling the drives in RAID 0 or 1 give me and will it mean its more stable and likely to cause me less problems?

I use 1TB for O/s then i have 2 x 2TB HDDs for data, one backing up the other. I store my client computer backups on the 1TB HDD. Make sure if you are installing WHS 2011 only have the O/S drive connected otherwise you will probley end up with the O/S on the biggest HDD.

No don't get me wrong everything about it is perfect and I'd take it over having to build my own or get a more powerful one for the price.

I would just have preferred it is they had an option for a more powerful CPU.

Bump....

Does anyone have an OCZ SSD/bracket as well as a Microserver? Looking at their bracket it seems to align the 2.5 disk correctly, but hard to tell from pictures.

Quick question - does the uServer have support for XP (yeah I know its old but it works and XBMC has Samba issues with W7) ???

Edit: Found a few links for XP drivers. Looks like I'll be buying one (again, 3rd time!)
