Good Cheap Server - HP Proliant Microserver 4 BAY - OWNERS THREAD

Just installing Windows updates on mine and it seems pretty quick so far! Just installed S2KR2 and an extra 4GB of RAM. Once updates are done I'm going to start building some VMs

another quicky, lol

as im waiting for my esata to sata wire, can i install the OS,WHS 2011, & once the cable comes, unplug it from the drive bay & put hdd in the top drive, then plug into esata?

i have done the bios hack, im just waiting on this cable, but itching to install the OS.

i dont think there should be a problem, as ill just make that hdd first boot priority again..

Yes you can it will be fine, one word of warning some esata cables don't work with the microserver it seems to be luck of the draw.

Which drivers are missing? I don't see any errors in your screenshots!

I received mine yesterday and have just finished installing new RAM. Man, some of those cables are stubborn. I have a portable optical drive ready for WHS11.

I found cutting that little cable tie on the left hand side gave a little bit more play room when getting the SATA connector out and having the tray all the way out to the arrows :)

The device manager looks error free at the moment Mike... so leave it be for now and tackle it if you get a driver error at some point in the future :)

okie dokie, lol

i would rather install drivers though, so if anyone can link me to them...

iv just been to PCworld to pick up two more WD elements 2tb external hdd`s, the gits only told me i could only have 1? so i just said, well ill go next door to currys & give them my money instead, lol, then they just gave in & sold me the pair, lmfao..

there cheaper than buying the WD caviar green on there own, i just strip em down, lol

iv got another one for you, lol

iv noticed that my server only really gets used when anyone wants to watch a film.

now i have setup WOL & i have this silly app to start it up.

but i was kinda hopeing that WOL would work by:

1, when not in use, it would power down.
2, when someone on the network tries accessing it, it would power back up.

but it dont seem to work like that..

i have set the power button, so that if i press it, it will power down, but if i want it to power up again, i have to either press the button again, or use this app to send a magic? packet... but its a pain in the arse..

can i not have it so it will auto power down & up, as & when its used?

or is there a app that can remotely power down & up?

cos it seems to be in full power, even when its not being used..

You could use lights out.

quick question.

can i press f8 at start up and select a drive to boot? i am not a big fan of grub etc.

Want to have win 7 for htpc and server 2008 for hyper v

microserver is in its box waiting on hd prices to come down

Usually when you install the 2nd installation of windows during the install process it detects that another version of windows is already installed and you get choice of which you'd like to boot into at bootup. You can tailor the bootmenu by opening 'msconfig' in windows.

hey guys I finally got round to fitting a new gfx card in the Proliant...

was working fine (along with 8gb ram) ... or so I thought.

Chucked on a 20gb mkv file to play.... and stutter galore!

card is a HIS 6540 1gb card... I have vlc player installed and XBMC .... any reasons why this shouldnt play ?

did a new windows 7 install when I installed the gfx card... all updates applied... and latest AMD drivers
