Now ive got 16gb of memory i can at long last disable my pagefile. With 4 and then 8gb i was not able to disable my pagefile while playing bf3 without eventually getting a low memory crash. I do alt tab a lot to use admin tools and what not, but you'd think 8gb would be plenty.

Why ?

What res do you play at?

1080p.

Why would you want to disable the page file? It serves a very functional purpose.

It seems to speed up the use of my pc.

I'll give an example.

With a pagefile after alt tabbing many times the pc becomes slow, and the game bf3 starts to stutter. This is because the pagefile is being used/filled up unless im mistaken.

Since adding this 16gb that doesnt happen. I've got enough memory to hold almost everything on my computer. (slight exaggeration but im trying to make my point :D)

My pc is fully stable so i know a crash wont happen so i don't 'think' i need a pagefile. They say to have the pagefile match your memory size so that if a crash happens it records everything that was in memory i think.

Of course i could be wrong, but disabling definitely makes a speed difference.

Do you think windows 7 will use pagefile over ram? no... it will use ram until it runs out... so disabling the pagefile is just a placebo effect.

apps will crash if you run out of memory, thats what it's there for, disabling it causes no speed increase whatsoever because it's not used until it's needed

If you've got the cash, go get an SSD and complete your system :p

I actually already have one Senz. :p

An Intel 80gig SSD from ocuk. Sadly they dont stock them anymore.

I also have a 500gig Hyrbid SSD A Momentus XT. I used to keep the pagefile on that.

Before anyone says try it on the SSD, i did. It helped but it didnt solve the problem.

I tab out quite a bit and have not had an issue. I have 8GB of Ram.

Well its often that i have firefox and a load of tabs open as well, not to mention procon and other bits and bobs. If you ran bf3 for a long time and spent all day tabbing in and out im sure eventually you would use up your memory and start eating into the pagefile.

I run bf @ ultra with x4AA. Also i have windows 7 aero on adjust for best visual or something. But that uses up a fair bit of memory.

With regards to the game stutter, when i alt tab i could be hitting the video memory limit, i know with my settings i get very close to it. So after a lot of use i think i use up all my video cards memory and windows starts filling up the page file with it.

I've got 4GB of RAM (If you had told me a few years ago that I would be out of date with 4 gig I wouldn't believe you), and any time I alt tab out task manager only shows battlefield using about 1.5GB? Is that normal?

I think it depends on what settings you use in game and on windows. What detail do you run at ?

I've seen battlefield 3 use 3.2 gig of my memory after sustained usage coupled with alt tabbing.

Medium all the way in BF, 2xAA and 1080p, so probably not that much. Aero is turned on, I had set BF to switch it off when it started but it was doing my head in by not switching back.

Yeah i think if you cranked it up a bit you'd see more memory usage, system and video at a guess.

I used to use that little trick you mentioned before i got the extra ram. You could save a nice amount of video memory that way.

The most V-ram I have seen used at 1080p max settings is 1260mb.

I'm not sure memory is your problem tbh. I don't know what it is but I'm running almost the same setup as you and have no issues tabbing in and out or game slow down with multiple windows open and browsers etc running in the background.

???

at 1080p my vram regularary uses 1350mb thats with everything max except msaa at 2x, with it at 4x Vram usage hits 1490mb and thats with windows aero disabled too.

Yep sounds about right. :)

So as you can see im close to the limit. Throw in the alt tabbing and youre gonna go over that limit.

When you alt tab you can see the game running in the background on the top of firefox. Its a cool effect, thats gotta eat up video memory as well.

BF3 completely unplayable, get kicked 30 seconds into a server, huge thread on battlelog forums, thousands of people having the same issues.

Sigh!
