1.2 Punto, £24 grand for insurance.

Not true, go onto admiral and try it. Put your car is worth 3K and then 15K

Touché, most 17 year olds part time jobs involve working in some sort of shop/retail environment though :P

Most insurers do specifically ask for "Main occupation", it's not unheard of for them to cause a fuss if you put your main work as "shopkeeper" when you only work a few days a week, but are a full time student, as technically student is your main "job" in their eyes.

It does make a difference on what value your car is, i accidently put my parents car down as worth 100k when i was looking around for quotes once and the prices more than doubled even though the rest of the information was all the same, so value of the car makes a difference!

Obviously lol, I don't mean increase it to extortionate amount, 10-15K is fine for a car that is worth about 4. Go and try it and you will be pleasantly surprised :)

LOL

He's right, just did it with an Elephant quote I had open, put the value as £5000 instead of £2000 and it knocked £25 off.

£10,000 took a further £15 off the premium.

I wonder how that would be viewed given the car is clearly worth nothing like that amount and so it's obviously misleading?

When I insured my 335i it went up by £30 when I put the value as over £20k!

Insurance works on mysterious ways!

It's entirely possible that from a low value car to slightly higher may reduce the cost, but then after a certain threshold raising it any more will have a negative effect. Unless you get access to their statistics databases it's a hard one to answer properly!

Insurance will only ever give book value, thats why certain scams such as gap insurance exist.

I'm well aware they'd only give book/market value as a payout but given that getting caught being deliberately misleading (or lying) about some things on insurance proposals (like really being the main driver when insured as named) can lead to the insurance company withdrawing cover, I wonder how this would be viewed in the case of an accident, as it's clearly a lie and is altering your risk profile in some manner that it shouldn't be (presumably people with higher value cars are more careful?).

It sort of is. Sort of.

It's a vauge question, one man's treasure is one man's junk, you can just say it's worth that to you. And can they really question it? I doubt they would but maybe feel bad they are only giving you 1k for your car :P

after all that trouble i think i have no choice but to just give up on even thinking about a car of my own.

thanks all for advice/tips appreciate it.

Old people get stuffed as well.

I am 40 next month & was thinking of buying a 8 seater minibus for the family nothing special just a 1999-2000 model Ford Transit for £1,000-£1,500.

My last transit van insurance was just under £500:D 2 years ago.
Cheapest quote so far is in excess of £4,500:mad: due to a 14 month ban.

I will be ringing around/googling later today as that's a joke

That's nothing really to do with your age though is it? It's because you've had a ban, presumably for drink driving?

I've been ill enough over the past couple of years to warrent not having a running car, however my insurence allows me to drive other peoples cars 3rd party with their consent, which can be very handy at times. Plus I see no harm in continuing building my no claims.

So I currently insure a sorn 900cc petrol Pug 205 (that cost £150 buy) for £20 a month.

I'm 34 with 4 years no claims but there is some merit in having a sorn, cheap to insure car in the family :)

Some pointers for the Admiral group of insurance

-Say your car is worth a lot more than it is i.e £15,000, if you do have a crash, they will only ever give you book price of the car anyways

- Add your mother and father onto the account as named drivers

- Limit your Mileage to about 5000,

-Say your car is parked on the street! Sounds silly, but it is less than if you say its parked on a driveway or in a garage

-increase the excess to £500

-If you have a job say you are a shop keeper, if not a student

-Car is fitted with an engine mobilizer, if it has a tracker, that too

-No mods (only if it genuinely doesn't have them however) adding alloys shouldn't put the price up

Try that and see how much it comes down :)

I'm 19, a quote for a 2.5 focus ST came down from 1.9k to 1.5 K from following them steps

Then ring up, and see if they can bring it down even more!

Good luck.

All I can see here is, if some of the information is incorrect which it more than likely is. All you have got it a £1,500 piece of paper.

Have a crash and the insurance company are more than likely going to tell you to do one, when they see that you "claim" to do 5000 miles per annum, until they check your MOT and service log books and realise that you've done 9000 miles in the last 9 months.

It's not wise to lie on your insurance policy, the insurer will pick up on this, and they love not having to pay to repair your "£15,000" Focus ST, which is actually only worth half that.

The point I was making was the 900% increase, I am not 900% likely to reoffend.
Without the ban the insurance quote is still more than double what I was paying 2 years ago

Which you can't do - the policy is fulfilled in the event of a total loss.

Not always true. My MoreThan policy carried on even after I wrote off a car, I had paid the premium in full at the start of the term, and then paid a small admin charge to switch to another car for the remainder of the policy (just over 2 months).

Nah, He'll be fine. The biggest thing there is the milage but he said 'limit your milage to 5000' not 'say 5k and do as many as you like'. That would be stupid.

I think you'll find that is likely to be due to you insuring a minibus which may well be carrying passengers and if you currently have to declare the DR10 which automatically puts you in the category to re-offend (whether you will or not whether you like it or not) so the insurer is seeing the potential for 8 passengers to claim off your insurance for injuries suffered due to own fault accident as a result of being over the limit.

Try it on a cheap 2 door car and see what the difference is. I'd be surprised if it was the same.

Or it may just be case that that particular insurer doesn't want drivers with a DR10 on their license so offers a premium way over the top - in other words we don't want your business.

but you will never recoup that wasted money

oh wait it's only £200 a year
