game in serious trouble?

They reported an operating profit in 2011 of £28m on a gross profit of £427m. Ok, granted, they've since issued a profit warning but a profit warning doesnt mean 'we are losing money hand over fist' it means 'we do not expect to make the level of profit we'd like this year'.

Yet you think the 'sensible' thing for them to do is close the stores? Become more like play.com, right? Play.com's accounts are not publically viewable as they are not a plc but a few months ago the entire company was sold for just £25m so I rather suggest it's less profitable than GAME. (A non-indebted company with decent annual profits would be sold for far more than £25m).

Based on Game's current share price, they have a market cap of £15m.

I don't think so IMHO, not when games are concerned. I would love to see the stats from game sales from top to bottom and if it was pre-owned or digitally downloaded. Including total sales, total cost e.t.c.

Hopefully with more pre-owned stores and digital downloads.

For PC I'm sure downloads make up a very large proportion, but then you've got solid services in place and the benefit of competition.

On consoles, physical media will continue to be the norm for many years yet. Removing the retail channel would be suicide, people aren't ready for a download-only service on a console; the PSP Go partly proved that.

They would be if download was the only/easiest way to go. PSP Go just showed that people would not pay significantly more for downloads than for physical.

Oh and aww, Game. My first job was with them :(

Went in other day, they had a big sale sign up and most of the sale items were preowned games, 75% of the shop is taken up with preowned stuff

Totally lost the plot. Tiny section for brand new games, they got greedy and the pig is ready for slaughter, would spend ages in GAME as a kid and always buy my games from them.

But they wouldn't, because there are (and would still be) people who don't have access to fast broadband and don't want to be downloading massive games for more than they'd cost in retail.

Not to mention the fact that the retail channel will never allow it anyway; there's no profit to be made in selling the consoles really, so if the retailers can't sell the games they're not going to sell the consoles either. Again, the PSP Go showed that.

Twould be a shame to see then go- choice on the high street is a good thing. Customer service is decent in the Belfast store. Almost too good. I dislike the American approach where the staff are almost falling over themselves to offer help when all I want to do is be left alone to browse their stock. Or maybe Shopping just makes me grumpy!

Last time I went in was with a mate, who was trading metroid prime.

The guy asked "did you finish it?", to which he replied "no", and he sniggered.

True story :p

I don't think problems with game are global, Maybe our store is staffed by idiots but if u get the manager serving you he's spot on and replacements are easy. Gamestation is the same! Granger games is were my beef's with but thats a different topic of a rant :)

I have a bit of a love hate relationship with Game. Over the years it seems to have become more and more filled with pushy salesmen who (fair enough) ask me if I need any help - but then proceed to rabble on about the latest Pokemon or some other junk like they think I'm actually that naive and will buy it. That said, I've had some very amusing times in GAME at times with a few of the staff that have come and gone.

Generally I don't use GAME anymore, if I'm out shopping with the mrs I will of course pop in there and sometimes pick up a 360 or DS game for the kids - for that it's handy (although I've sometimes found the same title at HMV cheaper) but for PC I'm 95% downloads now. I think I've used Game's download service once in the last year for a game that I couldn't legally get on download anywhere else.

I guess I'd be sad to see it go, but kind of in the way of a once good friend that has since become a raging heroin addict, stolen a selection of savoury items from your fridge, generally made a complete twit of himself before falling asleep on your doorstep when the inlaws are due to visit.

For that reason alone, sorry Game but you gone buddy.

i hate grainer game the shops seem so cheap and low budget :S seems to be only young women that worth their aswell like they will draw the geeks in lol

Wont they just shut down all gamestation stores, never understood why they bought them.

I might be wrong here but I'm pretty sure gamestop (the us based gaming store) own game. They were the ones who purchased gamestation. It's clear they done this to strengthen their grip on the industry. I remember when there were loads of independent gaming stores... Now I can't recall the last time I saw one.

And you're right.... One of the stores should be closed down. In some retail area they're actually a few feet from each other. It makes no sense to me as they both offer the same service and products....
