New Headphones - Upto £300

It is a very ridiculous statement. People spend big £££ on pens, watches, clothes, cars, shoes etc. In the grand scheme of things, headphone audiophilia is cheap.

Some home speaker set ups cost well over £100,000 yet the most expensive headphone currently in production can be had for under £4000. Bargain!
 
I also consider my headphones (about £300) a good investment considering that they are very enjoyable to use, I am using them several hours every day and with good care they will last several years.

I've seen people spend silly amounts on stuff that they either rarely use or don't get much enjoyment from, yet they think I'm crazy when I buy expensive headphones.
 
The DT880 is just a different signature to the DT770 and DT990. What's "better" is a matter of preference. Some may find the DT880 lacking the immersion factor of an exciting sounding can like the DT990 when gaming.

Seems like the OP has gone for the K/Q701 though.

I can't afford that much myself, but I see no reason at all for the OP not to spend £300 on headphones. A good pair of headphones will last him a very long time and give him pleasure for many years. They'll outlast several PCs.

£300 for a good pair of headphones is nothing compared to the amount of money some people spend on luxury cars, travel, watches, fashion, etc.

What kind of an ******** begrudges someone spending £300 on headphones?
 
Lol Dr Dre... just to add to the trolling, but £300 headphones with the right equipment can make a huge difference on actually provide a cinematic experience.

Well I sure hope he's got a decent amp. The k701 is picky as all hell and sucks without a good amp. Generally regarded as the worst out of the 'golden trio' (HD650, DT880 and k701)

IMO they suck with a good amp too. :p

The K701s are so overly focused on being able to resolve the smallest nuance/detail to the highest degree, that they shoot themselves in the foot by being pretty crap at everything else.

nickrose - just be aware that the 701s have tight, but very anaemic bass when compared with almost all other cans, even when 'properly' amped. If they had decent bass, they'd be much better than any other headphone I've owned at a similar price, but they don't, and IMO they aren't.

My favoutrite out of the 'golden trio' are the HD 650s. I bought a pair of DT880 Premiums shortly after getting the HD 650s, and concluded that if I bought the Beyers first, I'd have probably prefered them over the HD 650s. The DT880s are smack in the middle of the HD650s and K701s in terms of sound signature.

Not fully decided on the Q701's as yet but the do sound good.

The Dr Dre dont sound too bad but the name and style put me right off.

I'm planning to go for the 880s first as they're £100 cheaper than the HD650s... I just blew about £700 on a amp/DAC :o

I think I'll grab the 650s later on though and just enjoy both.

I cannot agree that the K/Q701's are crap at everything else.
High levels of Bass is not that important to me, and they do provide a sound that I like which I think is the most important thing.
 
Sorry - didn't realise you'd listened to them. Did you compare them with any other headphones?
 
I always been interested in the K701 as a competitive gaming can, but cannot justify it at the moment and use the AD700 instead.

I do wonder why the Q701 is so much more expensive than the K701 though? Is it purely the styling and celebrity endorsement? There seems to be an equal number of people who say they sound identical as those who say the Q701 is superior.
 
Depends, i've just carried out the kees mod on mine. It's reduced the bass a bit and brought the mids forward.

Whether i like it or not only time will tell, and it's reversible anyway.

But if im honest, my yamaha EPH100 iems are to die for, i feel they're the perfect iem for me, everything is in near perfect balance and it has a silky timbre.

I did the part of the Kees mod once that tames the treble but reverted when I found the treble had either "burned-in" or I had just gotten used to it. I had no interest in the cotton wool damping part to reduce the bass and bring out the mids - in fact I opened more holes on the driver to increase the bass.:D
 
Hah didn't realize you had pro 900's

Well i will admit mine are still burning in, so i might remove it or have a play around with the pads at least.

I do miss the bass, but i like the forward mids, if the threble tames then they'll be ideal as i can always eq the bass a bit higher anyway.

We shall see eh.

Its interesting to see that you have use the AD700 for gaming when you have cans like the Audeze and the Denon's. Have you ever tried gaming with those, and how do the compare?
