Would an independant Scotland be forced to join the Euro?

Would the head of state still be the British (I guess by then we'd say 'English') monarch?
Would they have their own currency?

What would the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland become? The Kingdom of England, Wales and Northern Ireland?

If Scotland signs/joins the Schengen area (unlikely or not) what would happen to the border with England?

Would every British citizen need to get a new passport, issued by their new country?

What of public debt, the NHS, the military, education, and the multitude of things we currently share?

I'm not seeing many answers to all of these questions (though I'll grant you some of the questions are more my curiosity rather than anything that important). They can vote 'yes' if they want, but I don't see this happening for a while :p

does anyone else not really care? As an Englishman, I think they should be allowed to leave the UK and I wish them all the best. In fact, maybe its time to break up the UK and let wales and northern ireland govern themselves too.

I can't see what the big deal is, we are supposed to be a democracy so if they want independence then they are entitled to it. Its pretty clear to me that the scots hate England and the English, so just be done with it and lets go our seperate ways.

And it's attitudes like yours that make people consider independence. You'll find the majority of Scots are known to be welcoming, sure there's a few cretins about but that's no different in any country. I know multiple English/Foreign folk who moved up here and they all have nothing bad to say about the country and it's people, in fact most of them say they will probably stay here for the duration.

Troll post is troll!

if scotland broke from the uk, would they take a % of the debt with them?

nah you'll thank us with all the subsidy moneys you'd be saving :) :) :)

not sure on this whole independance malarky. its rather fine as it is just now that bit of independance with our own wee parliment buildng where we an discuss trivial crap but big brother in westminister to deal with all the big boy stuff like that involved in the serious business of running a country

its like scotland is a teenager. still living at home and having to abide by mum and dads rules but with that bit of freedom that we're allowed to stay up late at weekends and go to our friends houses on our own :)

That's quite saddening that opinion of yours. Unless my sarcasm detector is broke.

I suppose there is also a risk that Scottish Independence may create an upwelling of English Nationalism and calls for England to become independent from Wales and Northern Ireland...especially as the economic reasons for union with either are heavily weighted against England.......

I cannot see the economic benefit in a split. Without much regard for the SNP they seem alittle bit extremist. It is true, i believe people should be limited in voting until they fully understand the ramifications. This could end up disastrous!

To answer the original question, Scotland wouldn't have to join the Euro but I can't see how it could be allowed to remain in Sterling if it votes for full independance. It's monetary policy would potentially diverge from that of the rest of the UK and at that point its actions could affect the value of sterling. Why would Osborne allow that to happen?

I think their options (as somebody already mentioned) would be to either join the Euro or to have a Scottish pound. They could peg the latter against Sterling if there was a desire to maintain some sort of fiscal similarity to the current arrangement.

Scotland and Wales have their own parliament but England does not.

Now if we just fixed that, maybe we could all get along better. Devolve England, solve the West Lothian question and maybe devolve a few more powers from Westminster.

I haven't spoken to anyone that supports independence, but I suspect there are large regional variations. Everyone I know thinks its a daft idea. Setting it up would be a nightmare.

Not a great result:

The United Kingdom could be viewed on the world stage as a “power in irreversible decline” if Scotland votes for independence next year, a report by senior MPs has warned today.

The Commons Foreign Affairs Committee concluded that even the Special Relationship with the US could be harmed if a separate Scotland makes good its threat to remove the Trident nuclear deterrent from its waters.

Countries hostile to the UK would also seek to exploit the damage to Britain’s reputation and “soft power”, the report said, for example by lobbying for the UK to no longer be permanent member of the UN Security Council.

Having said that, I believe a 'Yes' vote for Scottish independence is unlikely and full independence even less so.

Contrary to popular belief, there are smart people in Scotland and thus the referendum results will most definitely keep Scotland in the UK. Scotland cannot and will not survive on it's own whether it was in or outside of the EU. Same goes for Wales and just look at the ROI for crying out loud. Utter madness...

And the report is not biased in anyway, yeah right. How about an independent report without all the scaremongering no chance. Westminster has done a marvellous job of damaging the UK, Time for Scotland to exit. Y214

And you think we'll be better off with The Toad running the show? I think not.

The sooner the vote comes and we can put all the independence rubbish behind us the better.
