Homeless people in January

Woohoo, was waiting for someone to mention this so I could link this:

Would I buy some food/drink/clothing and give it directly to a homeless person? Much, much, more likely.

I've tried this and got abuse back. So charities it is.

100% right. :D

I am not saying all homeless people are dependant on some drug, including alcohol, but I would guess at 90%+. I am also not a troll I just seem to have a different opinion to most people on here. Maybe when somebody posts the answer to why people choose to be homeless and also why they think that giving a homeless person money is a good idea i will be enlightened. What do they spend this money on as i have never seen them spend it. I don't give homeless people money as i have made the decision not to. I believe giving them money will not help the situation of homeless people at all so it will be of no benefit to me or the person begging for money.

Some young people are homeless because they have been sexually abused throughout their childhood, and if they just moved to another town or city they they become traceable due to bills, bank accounts, driving licence etc. They then live on the streets so they cant be found and because you have no fixed abode, it is impossible to get a job. Signing on means they are traceable. They just dont want to be found, because they dont want to go back to a life of abuse. Giving that person money means they might be able to eat, or pay for a night at a shelter.

Just because you are clueless it doesnt mean there arent genuine cases that do need help. My wife used to volunteer at Center Point in London, and some of the stories she was told would break your heart. Perhaps you could volunteer at a local one and see for yourself and be educated, or you could just carry on in your ignorance.

I have mixed views on giving money but I o occasionally do it. Yes there is a risk they may spend it on cigarettes, alcohol or other drugs. But if you were homeless and cold, sleeping rough every night, wouldn't you turn to those things to try to keep the cold out of your bones? Unless we have been in the same situation we can't know how bad it is. Granted some may be there of their own volition but there will equally be many who don't wish to be, and would swap places with many of us in a heartbeat.

I kinda was thinking about it if i was made homeless, not by drug and alcohol abuse or what not basically with all my sanity loool i would choice to live on the streets then a homeless shelter - It the though of sleeping with people who could be homeless with mental issues, drug abuse or just generally being a alcoholic. I doubt you have the luxury of staying in a single room in shelters or hostels or any help given by the government seeing there probably choice the cheapest method. IDK i am babbling so i guess sometimes live on the streets could be a lot safer :D

I used to give some money to this chap in my local town, then I saw him playing a touch-screen mobile phone and was like wtf?

Yes that's not uncommon. A homeless chap near me was once seen by a work colleague a he got up, took the blanket off and underneath he had designer clothes and brand new trainers. Clearly not a homeless person and we all stopped giving to him instantly.

Maybe a Professional Busker or just someone pretending to be homeless to exploit peoples charity? You here stories about people who beg/busk all day then walk a far bit back to their car at the end of the day and drive back home. Wouldn't surprise me if true as people are capable of doing anything and makes people who are really in the gutter look ever worse.

Someone who is in that state (which could happen to any of us) is already going to be low and any bit of change may help them in some way. They may well spend it on drugs/booze but everyones situation will be different. Some will be able to try helping themselves others won't. It's easy to just brand them all as 'scum' and carry on your everyday wally in ignorance.

I havn't ever given more than afew pounds but i have warned one against eating what he was just given due to who gave him it, would have contained some sort of drugs/poision. He wasnt very liked then he ended up killed, cut up in 6 pieces and scattered all over town :( Poor guy he didn't hurt no one he just had problems

Remind me to avoid Grimsby.

I spoke with a guy this evening that is French living in Brighton. He was working here last year. He lost his job, lost his flat and now is sleeping on the street. DWP won't pay him benefits. He has no passport and no money to get a replacement - he can't even go home to France if he wanted to.

He sleeps at the moment at a carpark that is being built. He is there because the construction workers allow him to sleep overnight as long as he is gone by 8am each morning.

He sits on the side of the street with no place to go. He doesn't beg. Still, passers by spit on him and treat him like dirt. Everyone is entitled to basic human dignity.

We could all so easily be there instead.

Why doesnt he go to the French embassy or better yet ask a relative for £100 to get a passport sorted.

Ah, fair enough.

Out of interest what kind of things did they say? (did they give any indication as to why they were so angry that you were trying to feed them?)

Or why cant they organise a whip round for the guy? If they could get 100 people to chip in a pound each, it would fund the new passport? Then his embassy would surely get him back to France?

Homeless guys hang outside tesco/co-op and as soon as you give them cash they go inside and buy beer. so... why would you give them money, cold or otherwise. f that

Why wouldnt he ? If you are homeless, what are you going to do, go home and watch the TV, surf the internet, play a game ? Or sit in the park and watch the world go by with nothing to do and no money thinking of where you are going to sleep tonight.

Exactly why giving anything to them is a total waste. If I were homeless I'd be doing everything in my power to get myself out of the situation, not waste it on alcohol. It's one reason being homeless is a choice. There is NO reason to be homeless in this country today, there is SO much help available yet most are to lazy or to bothered about the next drink to care.

I can see why problems like this never get solved. If even ordinary people are so far removed from it, those in power have no chance.

Don't give beggers anything tbh... it just encourages them.

Some of them are homeless some of them are not genuine.. if you want to help homeless people then donate money to shelter or similar charities. Your money will be put to much better use that way.

You have no idea what you would be doing.

It easy enough to say 'if I were homeless, I would do..' from a privileged position, but actually being on the street is a very different thing, and can easily destroy you (I imagine).

I dont think I would survive very long on the streets. I dont really have the street smarts or the toughness to survive sleeping rough.

They'd probably find me dead in an alleyway within a month.
