Good Cheap Server - HP Proliant Microserver 4 BAY - OWNERS THREAD

i was tempted to order a second one, but after reading there might be a better spec model of the exact same chassie, im holding out, just incase...

Can't believe how good the onboard NIC is (even no jumbo frames), I can pretty much saturate GigE, WHS2011 is running much better now with 8Gig Mem.

Had the opposite experience, and opted for a add in NIC and disabled the onboard

Well I'm running a couple of Linux VMs so I just need as much RAM as I can get.

I understand that Linux will eat as much RAM as you can throw at it.... but surely running multiple guest VM's and the host at the same time the impact on performance is more down to core allocation and not just amount of RAM you have crammed into the MB alone?

So you are running EXSI

You can see by this thread that some of the tech heads are running these boxes at well above just a simple fileserver/streamimg/torrent box so installed RAM will vary on setups.

RAM prices are very cheap.... but do you really ... really need it in your particular application at the moment?

just a thought :cool:

I only have 4GB - seems fine for my application at the moment (ESXi with file server and pfsense), but the temptation to run a windows VM is growing - I think I'd need to jump to 8GB at that point.

hmm im having issues again, lol

i cant source a hp half-hight dvd-rw for it, i have bought TWO now & had to send them back, as HP have put full size dvd-rw roms inside there half-height boxs.

i have phoned hp & they are now aware of the issue, but dont actually have any half-height ones...

so my problem now is..

could i use another half-height dvd-rw burner? i have looked but cant seem to find a half-height one.

i could get there matching hp usb dvd-rw & try to screw/mount it on the side? but i think ill struggle doing this, as there wont be any pre holes to do so.

or ditch the idea all together & wack in another 2tb in the rom slot & find a place to mount the smaller OS drive?

this is terrible of HP...

can anyone help?

i want to use a 60gb ssd as the main drive with whs2011
i have read that i need to load a usb stick with the dvd installation files which i have done with the microsoft tool
also followed this post

"Just installed WHS 2011 on on a 60GB SSD, had bit of a pain as well due to minimum requirement being 160gb! It would error when it tried to make the partiton and it was too large for the disk! I guess MS thought they were being helpfull with that requirement.. anyway had a look around and it turns u can work around the issue by adding an ini file to a usb stick which the installer then reads. I placed a file named cfg.ini in the root of the usb stick with the following contents:"

[WinPE]
ConfigDisk=1
CheckReqs=0
WindowsPartitionSize=MAX

it still wont install it fails on the partition size

questions

to create a cfg.ini file i have done this via notepad and saved it as a cfg.ini file
also where is the "root" of the usb, i presume its the main folder on the usb drive ie just drag and drop the config file into the usb drive

is the above correct as i have done this and still cannot get it to install

to be clear it installs fine on the original disk

thanks

What people refer as a 'standard size' optical drive is in a half-height 5.25" form factor (full-height 5.25" form factor was only used by early 80's drives) so they were labeled right, what i guess you want is a slimline optical drive i.e the type that goes into laptops.

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CD-124-SA&groupid=701&catid=10&subcat=952 - I have a feeling you might need an adaptor for the power/sata connector as i think slimline drives use a combined power/sata connector instead of 2 separate connectors like on half-height drives.
