Good Cheap Server - HP Proliant Microserver 4 BAY - OWNERS THREAD

hmm im having issues again, lol

i cant source a hp half-hight dvd-rw for it, i have bought TWO now & had to send them back, as HP have put full size dvd-rw roms inside there half-height boxs.

i have phoned hp & they are now aware of the issue, but dont actually have any half-height ones...

so my problem now is..

could i use another half-height dvd-rw burner? i have looked but cant seem to find a half-height one.

i could get there matching hp usb dvd-rw & try to screw/mount it on the side? but i think ill struggle doing this, as there wont be any pre holes to do so.

or ditch the idea all together & wack in another 2tb in the rom slot & find a place to mount the smaller OS drive?

this is terrible of HP...

What are you actually trying to achieve Mike?

can anyone help?

i want to use a 60gb ssd as the main drive with whs2011
i have read that i need to load a usb stick with the dvd installation files which i have done with the microsoft tool
also followed this post

"Just installed WHS 2011 on on a 60GB SSD, had bit of a pain as well due to minimum requirement being 160gb! It would error when it tried to make the partiton and it was too large for the disk! I guess MS thought they were being helpfull with that requirement.. anyway had a look around and it turns u can work around the issue by adding an ini file to a usb stick which the installer then reads. I placed a file named cfg.ini in the root of the usb stick with the following contents:"

[WinPE]
ConfigDisk=1
CheckReqs=0
WindowsPartitionSize=MAX

it still wont install it fails on the partition size

questions

to create a cfg.ini file i have done this via notepad and saved it as a cfg.ini file
also where is the "root" of the usb, i presume its the main folder on the usb drive ie just drag and drop the config file into the usb drive

is the above correct as i have done this and still cannot get it to install

to be clear it installs fine on the original disk

thanks

I recognise that post :p You're right about the root, it is just the main folder so to speak. Notepad by default will put a .txt extension on the end of every file even if you named it config.ini when saving, if you have windows file extensions showing it will show the actual extensions..sorry of that's obvious and you have checked this already! Other than that the installer should just scan the usb drive when installing and bypass the check, I didn't do anything else that I recall!

i have tried everything i can think of, it always fails on the size of the ssd

have spent most of the day trying different things, any ideas?

What people refer as a 'standard size' optical drive is in a half-height 5.25" form factor (full-height 5.25" form factor was only used by early 80's drives) so they were labeled right, what i guess you want is a slimline optical drive i.e the type that goes into laptops.

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CD-124-SA&groupid=701&catid=10&subcat=952 - I have a feeling you might need an adaptor for the power/sata connector as i think slimline drives use a combined power/sata connector instead of 2 separate connectors like on half-height drives.

Full-Height left, Half-Height middle

ah i see what you mean, so slimline is what im after then..

great little box

I brought one a few weeks back and its been great. I got 8gb of ramm for it and i run........ Vsphere 5 - with a 08R2 Domain controller with exchange, terminal server for a few users (not many more for testing), 08r2 counter strike source server for 10 or so people, a windows 7 client so i can use vpshere on it and forward the port so i can access it from remote - a ubuntu apache server with a few websites on, and finally a freenas setup for shares and sftp! Its all fine with no problems! Well defiantly buy another. (all those servers are running all the time at around 6gb memory).

got a question that someone may be able to help with, ive got the hp device on all the time and is called NAS and on my network on windows 7 ultimate ive got my main pc and NAS, now sometimes the NAS goes away, running windows 7 ultimate on that, now i click refrest and nothing shows up, if i restart the NAS system it shows up in the network pc area and i can copy stuff from my main pc to the NAS, why does it do this and is there anyway to prevent it? there both plugged into the same switch and getting 80mb a sec speeds copying stuff over.

Try manually giving the microserver a IP address and see if that helps.

if anyones intrested the only way i could get this to work was to use acronis to move the os to the ssd,
1 question though will the ssd be aligned properly?

Here's a question then:
Why would you want to put your WHS2011 onto a SSD? Your data will no doubt be held on other non-SSD storage and WHS2011 only acts as the file server, so i can't see how you'll notice any performance increases.
I cetainly do this for regular user rigs AND i often clone installs from mechanical to SSD, but i just can't see what benefit you'll get from having WH2011 on a SSD?

Thought?

finally...: installed WHS 2001, in the bottom half of the tray, & dvd-rw in the top.

just gotta wait for the rear adapter, then ill put it all together.

quick edit: thanks very much for DIABLO, for pointing me out in the right direction...
cheers fella, your a diamond..

Whats the preferred 1TB HDD of choice for raid 5 in these things? (just bought an Intel RAID Controller RS2WC040 )
Hanging my nose over the WD Caviar Green 6GB?
I assume they'll be fine for streaming 1080p over gigabit lan?

I've just setup mine with 3x 2TB WD Green drives. They seem fine! Mostly maxing out the gigabit connection as well.
