*****Official Star Wars: The Old Republic Thread*****

Been playing a BH (lvl 41) and enjoying the game a fair bit - this has been helped by getting a guild of old WoW players reformed after we all quit a year or so ago, so has been fun messing about :) However, I hot a bug over the weekend where I managed to refuse a linking quest on Hoth (wasn't labelled as refuse quest in conversation options), and now can't get it again. Neither can I see any other quests on Hoth. This is a known bug apparently but is very frustrating as I like the planet and would like to finfish it. I've raised a ticket, but don't know if they will do anything.

I am very patient with most of the issues that the game has, and will stick with it for a ta least a month, but issues like this one really need to be fixed - no excuse for not fixing something that leaves 2/3rds of a zone unplayable.

The hi-res textures thing is also starting to annoy me, especially as all their promo material uses hi-res textures in the images. Seems like false advertising to me. Might seem petty, but does anyone know whether this is the sort of the thing the ASA would deal with? I thought that if images/footage used weren't achievable in game then the ad had to label it as such.

Cant believe nobody has mentioned how bad the game engine is or the coding?

I get massive frame drops which results in stuttering even though i have a ms of 30-35.

Lots of other people are having the same issue on the forums with BW not knowing what is causing the problem.

My conclusion is the Hero Engine is pants, but saying that there are loads of ppl that arent experiencing these issues?.

I fear that BW will lose lots of subs because of this issue, and thats without all the other problems with the game.

I wont even mention the CS which is terrible

I like the game and will give it a few more months yet.

I'm suffering with this framerate issue. In warzones i'm getting sub 25fps regardless of resolution or detail settings. Totally not enjoyable. Latency to server 30-40ms.

Its a shame because I really did enjoy what I played, cancelling until they fix it.

Turning shadows off helps, but my frames still plummet from a constant 60 to low 20s when in the fleets especially?

Opening my character sheet i get a 1 second pause and frames jump down to low 20s.

I have to run the game in full screen windowed mode and use D3D Overrider to get decent frames and to eliminate stuttering, even though i still get frames drops and stuttering at random times.

Im now forcing AA using Nvdia inspector which has improved the stuttering for me a bit,you work that one out lol?

My PC should be running this game flawlessly.

I have reinstalled OS and reinstalled the game as well, ive also disabled anti-virus/firewalls. Im now running the game on a SSD,which hasnt improved nothing. Im hoping Nvdia new drivers will help.

From reading info on the Hero Engine i cant believe BW who spent £300 million have used an engine that is not proven and does not use multithreading for CPUs?,saying that there are the majority that play this fine ,so its strange.

What i do know is there are many more with high end systems that are experiencing this problem, ive eliminated everything software wise on my system as the cause.

You have to remember too that the people posting here tend to be at the hardcore end of the MMO gamer spectrum.

A lot of the people complaining here have put in more playtime in a month than the average player will in 3 or 4. I don't think you'll see a huge drop after month 1, and hopefully by month 4 when the majority of the playerbase are hitting a brick wall, they'll have content ready for them.

Even so, I have doubts about the long term viability of the game. I'm a casual alt-aholic, and I still can't see myself being around after about 6 months or so.

Yeah that's true, I can't believe people max level in under a week, heard the record is like 3 days or something crazy. I just don't have the time to max out and see everything in a month, I'll still prob not be 50 in 6 months, the wife just won't allow it... lol.

Framerate issues are a real issue for me too.

My PC is just above min spec but wasn't expecting anything amazing but sometimes it plays fine and other times it is totally unplayable.

Win 7 64, 2gb ram, 4400+ and 2 x 8800gt

I have noticed that if I leave my PC and it logs the character out for inactivity, when I log back in it really runs terribly.

The starter areas also don't have any issues, Coruscant gave a few minor issues but after that it's terrible for me :(

But what so special that is coming march?
I know they having the new exspansion ect but that it.

Currently getting rather depressed here on Bxun battle server, seem to have very few english speaking people on this english server and a LOT of people dont use Chat/general ....

Currently seem to have 1-2 guilds who just sit on PvP and roll with a full 50 level man squad fully PvP geared ie cof 24/7 players cof cof no life cof cof, and just roll the warzones all day, rather sad and means beating them is impossible.....

I probably going to cancel subcription and wait a couple of months before coming back as the server feels dead, sure there are "lots" of people on it, but during the game i NEVER see any of them, heroics are dead, flashpoints are rare to even do, and no 1 ever uses the LFG ability bar 1 or two people.

Just feels like a singleplayer game for me, and this isnt what i want in a MMO, i liked how in other MMOs i was able to just walk into a public questing area, say "HI" to some people and start questing with them/area quests....then from this buddy up and do some PvP and "flashpoint" style quests together, felt much more "multiplayer".

anyhow thats my little rant, some will say it isnt the games fault but your server, but for me the game should give you the tools to access the community on the server and thus make use of them to enjoy the game, rather than just using server numbers.

Might come back if they allow transfers as i would move to Frostclaw just to get with your Guild and buddy up:D or if more OCKs/ brits come to Bxun Battle Circle

Are you sure this is not because of screensaver/monitor going on standby? Mine does it when my screen goes on standby, have to set it to full screen then back to windowed (and possibly vice versa).

The Dark Immortals is the guild for the Immortals to be on if they want to have an alt Imperial side character.

But the Immortals (republic side) is the main guild with 40-70 on in regular hours.

Yes, I ran into Baeyne last night and had a brief chat with him.

I keep running into Immortals when I play PvP, its fun. Hopefully there's be a few more Imperials on it as I wouldn't mind having a bash at the Immortals in some open PvP later on.

Still enjoying leveling at the moment, gotten to 32 and not really rushing at all.

Seems my server will have a lack of Tanks as the girlfriend is level 24 and getting asked into groups all the time!

We also had a huge amount of Sith Socerors at the beginning but I rarly see them anymore, maruder and assasin now seems to be the choice of class.

Has anyone cleared all the OPS raids yet? Was reading the swtor forums and saw loads of people have :o

Main computer is not usable atm so chugging away on a i3 2130 with a 6750 on a 15" screen.

1024x768 everything low (shadows off) gives up to 80fps in an uncrowded zone.

In PVP in some warzones its possible to get below 20. Generally it's 30+ though, has to be something crazy going on to to really cause a problem.

They are going to struggle, we have a busy server, but yer sometimes it feels much more single player then mmo.

Some basic stuff missing or not very well done which is annoying as hell for me:

  • The market is horrible to use - the show for xxx just does not work
  • No guild bank - why is it missing no excuse!
  • No guild perks or levels - been around since 2008 so no excuse
  • Cant invite to group from guild list only friends
  • PVP is crazy hard against lots of level 50 players at lower levels
  • No looking for guild or guild advertising available to us apart from shouting in general chat
  • When putting items in your bank they do not auto stack - again come on happens it all other mmo games
  • Broken guild window with the need to keep pressing ctrl+UU to refresh

I am not 50 yet but a few who reached it quick have already gone back to WOW.

Not enough to kill the game for me, I just feel if you cant get basic bits working for release what does that mean for bigger more important items.

For a game that is banging on about the social aspect, not having the main area "guilds" working well at all is very poor going.
Agreed!
Seems to me TOR will likely be one of the last MMOs to go down the monthly pay route, maybe a follow up to WOW will be able to get away with it but I don't think we'll see that many in the future. I think most will go the free to play microtrasaction route and a few others going one off payment like Guild Wars 2.

I think month 2 will be over 300k and that's not a disaster by any means, the scale of success is skewed due to WOW. There will be free trials and big expansions in the future which will pull in new and bring back existing players (and a load more when they get high res textures in, lol).

Supposedly 4m copies of TOR have been sold (inc. 1m pre orders), that more than covers the development cost in itself already which is a success, obviously there are ongoing costs but 4-5m a month in subscriptions ain't bad esp. as WOW has set the bar so high in standards but lets remember that has been painful over the years too.

Has been a tough month for BioWare in some ways which is a shame but they've consistently created top quality PC titles so I'm willing to give them a bit of leeway while they learn too.
Utter and total garbage!, if I had a penny for every time I heard this idiotic argument I would be rich, the paid for MMO will be around for a long long time yet!
It seems the fellows from The Dark Immortals haven't been on in a while either. Such a pity, I would have liked to join that guild.

I have run into the Immortals a few times in pvp, good fun.

Few more joined the Dark Immortals last night, there is always one or two on but not many, as been said its our sister guild and we are primarily a Republic guild, tho in time we will grow the Sith guild, just no rush.

That's your opinion matey and you're welcome to it but take a look at MMORPG.com and see how many upcoming games are going down the F2P route, I think you'll find it's most of them.

http://www.mmorpg.com/gamelist.cfm/show/development/MMORPG-Games-in-Development.html

I'm not saying there won't be any, but it's becoming quite an ask to get enough paying subscribers to make a game profitable, if it ain't profitable then companies aren't going to keep doing it.

If this wasn't the case why have Star Trek, Global Agenda, LOTRO, City of Heroes, Age of Conan and a ton of other games all changed to a different model? There was an interesting interview with one of the team of LOTRO about how much more money they've made since the change, I'll try and find it for you, was interesting reading.

Are there any really big MMORPG's coming up using the monthly pay model?

Is that so?

I'd love to read your reasons as to why.

Me too. Given only a couple of MMOs have managed to pull it off long-term (and the jury is out on SWTOR) and the F2P model has had great success, in some cases tripling revenue and certainly keeping aging MMOs on their legs long after they would have disappeared into the mists of time - i'd be curious what argument you could make to nervy investors about putting all your eggs in one basket? Over to you Wab.

Ohhh, I shall keep an eye out for you in PvP mate :)

I enjoy the game myself, it has issues I admit, but far less than any other game just after release IMO. Few too many features not fully implemented though (guilds etc) that is a bit of a disappointment, but they have time to sort these.

I'll sub for 6 months and see how it goes, I'm not going back to WAR and refuse to play WOW, so not a lot else out there for me.

F2P is very good, I read an article the other day about how much money one game made from F2P and was absolutely blown away with the amount.

You see it time and time again in MMO threads with people saying "I don't like the idea of paying monthly" but F2P they would play and then wouldn't have an issue dropping 10-20 a month if they want/need something... It's all about the psychology.
