Evaluate my build, am new to all this!

Welcome,

What is the build for? Gaming? If so, what kind of games do you play and at what settings?

Are you new to custom building?

These Answers will help us help you.

what kind of budget, £600?

The Bulldozers are really not worth investing in. The Phenoms are just as good. Sandybridge is even better.

You can get this sandybridge build for a simular Price. I added a Z68 board so you can upgrade to a 2500K/2600K/2700k and Overclock the Preverbiles off it. You can't Overclock the i3's.

YOUR BASKET
1 x PowerColor ATI Radeon HD 6950 2048MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card £199.99
1 x Intel Core i3-2100 3.10GHz (Sandybridge) Socket LGA1155 Processor - Retail £89.99
1 x Gigabyte Z68AP-D3 Intel Z68 (Socket 1155) DDR3 Motherboard £84.98
1 x Seagate Barracuda 7200.12 500GB SATA 6Gb/s 16MB Cache - OEM (ST500DM002) £69.98

Cheers for the quick reply. Yeah will mainly be for gaming, but my laptop is on its last legs so I hope it will get through 3/4 years of uni with no problems!

I am completely new to custom building, but I have enough friends who have done it themselves as to avoid catastrophic problems! I hope to play games such as skyrim, battlefield 3, knights of the of the old republic, starcraft 2 on high/ultra settings, does that sound fair?

And yeah my budget is around 600, can go a bit higher if needs be.

The RAM may Clash with the CPU cooler. Try a LP RAM, No need for a CPU cooler for the i3's anyway.

EDIT: To OP, You'll be able to get high/ultra out of the 6950's. The i3's are just as good performance wise as the phenom/bulldozer Quad-cores.

If you haven't seen i put a spec up to, see what you think. :)

I meant to choose the LP ones dang it. As for the cooler was added for future expansion and it doesn't hurt to have one.

EDIT: either way get an i3 + 6950.

That looks good to me. To save money what about:

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CA-166-CM&groupid=701&catid=123&subcat=1103
with £20 off:

Plus a modular PSU in the process :P

EDIT: Could then afford:

I had your budget OP and I went for a z68ap-d3 mobo and a 2500k, with some LP hyperX 2*4GB ram sticks and the barracuda HD you have there.

It's speedy!

Modular PSU's are great, Easy Cable management and just a great thing to have. I couldn't live without mine, though i have a tiny case. :)
It does mean cutting back on the case a bit though. Not that its a problem. the case is personal choice. :)

Not necessarily! You can have any case with that deal:
http://www.overclockers.co.uk/productlist.php?groupid=701&catid=7&subid=29&sortby=priceAsc

But that one is a good case I've built in that one and the Bitfenix, the Bitfenix is definitely better, but then it costs more :P I was surprised how good the CoolerMaster one was good for the price. Painted inside and all (usually reserved for expensive cases) at £35 and with money off it's a steal!

Cheers for that. Does sound a great buy, essentail it's £15 Aswell, with the PSU. Happy Days :)

Righto, really appreciate all this, but confusing as hell to me tbh, but you all seem to be know what your on about as compared to me haha. What do you mean by the LP ones, and you think its worth getting extra cooling, just in case? Set on the original case, just need a kinda revised build after all the feedback, and will it all be cool to run games on high etc, and will it all be compatible? excuse my amateurness, cheers!

you can get the same case with red fans ;) Yeah go for it, cheers man, the case is just about the only component I can understand....

Would rather pay a bit more but not have to do much upgrading etc in the future, seems good to me, you're the expert! Would ideally like to get it down 50 quid, but if thats going to dramtically affect performance i will leave it as it is!
