Home cinema system that plays MKV blueray rips?

are you sure?? - my ps3 plays 1080p MKV's perfectly fine- stream from my server. Full DTS and everything.

Without meaning to hijack the thread too much. What are you using to do this? Any specialist equipment or software? Are you doing anything to the files before playing them?

If you're streaming from your server, I should have no problem streaming from my macbook pro in the same manner.

Would I also be able to just play them straight from an external hard drive plugged in to the ps3?

My PS3 won't play MKV's but i have only tried from a USB 8GB flash drive and it is up to date on the firmware. It does play AVI files though.

Exactly the same for me, I have only tried from my external hard drive though a couple of months ago and the MKV wouldn't work, which is why I was curious about others not having problems!

AVIs I have absolutely no problems with, but MKVs would be great if I could find an easy way to do so!

The PS3 cannot playback MKV files

If you are using PS3 media server then that is transcoding the MKV in real time to a format the the PS3 will play

Yep same here. Tired today.

Managed to play 5 seconds of the video, then after that, the video paused, jumped frame by frame in slow mo with no sound, and didn't correct itself.

Gave up!

Safe to say, PS# will not successfully play MKVs using PS3 MS

Were you using PS3 media server on your pc to transcode the mkv and using a wireless connection either from pc to router or router to ps3? If so try a wired connection between the pc and router and also between router and PS3. If that doesn't work then your pc may possibly not be up to the job.

Who wouldn't prefer XBMC over the manky GUI's of these media boxes. It's not that much more expensive either, especially if you have second hand parts already lying around.

cheap pc as a server (i knocked mine together for about £80 excluing hard drives) - install PS3 media server, stream 1080p mkv's via PS3. my server is in my garage hooked up via cat5 - well worth giving it a shot
