Virgin Internet... Actual Speeds

lol wut...

3.5GB between 4pm-9pm even on 20mbit, and its getting doubled when the internet speeds do

This is a dealbreaker if you want to download say, Steam games in a reasonable amount of time. An 8GB game might end up taking you 6 or 7 hours as they throttle you into oblivion for it! Sometimes I was getting throttled after 1.5-2GB of a game's download.

FTR I never use Newsgroups or BitTorrent so would be better off on a monthly cap rather than this system. It's why I'm moving to BT Infinity.

Whilst this may be a deal breaker for you, how often do you need to download that much data between those hours. Once you're aware of the shaping it doesn't take much effort to adjust the timings.

The only time I can see this being a pain is if you need something desperately. But I've never encountered an issue where the shaping has caused me any intolerable delay, but then again your threshold may have a lower ceiling than mine ;)

Are you getting the package with the 40GB usage allowance?

Yep. I can't see myself hitting that, and even if I do, it looks like I'll get limited to 1Mbit/s which is more than enough for my needs.

EDIT: Hmm reading through their T&Cs, it looks like Option 2 might be a better bet. Just found the page that says they charge you £5 per extra 5GB over your allowance! By my calculations I reckon I use about 30GB a month what with Youtube usage and gaming downloads, but I have no clue what game patches and stuff add up to.

Time to have a think actually...

I'm on the 10mb package, Which is normally about 9-10.

It does seem that this is often the case though...

Screw doubling the speeds, just give me a constant 10mb without the traffic management.

Never had a problem with VM, does what it says on the tin...

Now just waiting for them to double it!

Only once on Ntl/Virgin (cable) did I have a speed problem, I called them up and the guy said he was moving me to a different server. Once he did that and I'd reset my cable modem, all was fine again.

I didn't know they could move you to a different server on the fly. That's really useful info.

The first person I spoke to went through a sheet of pc checklist things, I had already told her that I 100% knew it wasn't a local issue. But what can you do, I just hung up and called again.

The next chap was excellent
