New a 1920x1080 monitor

Was about to press purchase on the Dell 23 monitor until I saw this inhttp://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MO-028-AS&groupid=17&catid=510&subcat=ch

I'm now looking at the £200 mark for a really decent monitor any suggestions guys? :D

That particular monitor uses a TN panel and if you have a google - it seems to have some ghosting issues.

If you want a 24in £150 TN panel monitor then I would suggest the Iiyama I mentioned in my first post - ie a decent quality 1080p 24in TN panel monitor that doesn't have any known issues and is known to do well with games.

But if you are prepared to spend £200 then just get the Dell - it's an excellent bit of kit (have a search on these forums for it and see how the end users find it).

No, the Dell offers a much better image quality - due to it's use of an IPS panel.

However, if you only want to spend £150 then the Iiyama is the best monitor to get since it offers decent image quality (a TN panel) along with a large size, 1080p resolution, good responsiveness and a lot of positive feedback from users who play games on it.

I should break down my monitor recommendations based on budget and your uses (gaming):

sub £90 - buy second hand or save up
£90-100 - the OCUK AOC 21.5in (TN panel)
£115 - BenQ 21.5in (TN panel)
£150 - Iiyama 24in (TN panel)
£180 - ASUS 23in (IPS panel)
£200 - Dell 23in (IPS Panel)
£240 - Dell 24in (IPS panel) or 23in 120Hz (TN panel)

I saw somebody on the forums post about a pixel dying in 3 weeks, so he can't return it under DSR is there a bit of software to test if there're any dead pixels when I receive this new monitor?

This is the application I used to test for dead/bright pixels. As you say, if you catch some dead pixels in the first 7 working days then you can return the monitor under DSR.

If you see any bright pixels (or a few dead pixels) then I would call up dell first as these monitors come with a "premium panel guarantee" for that - so if you go through Dell they should exchange the monitor on your doorstep (so you don't need to go to the hassle/cost of return delivery of a monitor).

About to press purchase, are you positive it's worth the money and there's nothing better for that money, and are Dell actually making decent monitors? :0 since when.

Also what shall I connect to the monitor when it arrives, VGA or Dvi ?

Yes, absolutely it is worth the money.

and there's nothing better for that money,

The only thing close is a 120Hz TN panel monitor like the Asus VG236HE (or the Asus VG236H and sell on the glasses). These do offer 120Hz refresh rates (so fast-paced games feel smoother) but the image quality will not be up to the level of the Dell - due to the IPS panel it uses.

Hence, I would still certainly go with the Dell, but if you want to give 120Hz a go (instead of IPS) then the ASUS is the best option at this price range.

Yea, it was a bit of a shock to me too when I first found out - but it turns out Dell have a long track record of making some really nice quality monitors. I suppose they sell so many full systems per year that having a nice quality Dell-branded screen helps them sell their products - plus many professionals demand a high-quality screen to do their work.

Also what shall I connect to the monitor when it arrives, VGA or Dvi ?

DVI, absolutely.

If you are really striving for smoothness then I would suggest looking for a 120Hz TN panel monitor like the Samsung S23A750. Due to the high 120Hz refresh rate, fast motion does feel a lot smoother than a standard 60Hz TN or IPS monitor. Plus, the panels these 120Hz monitors use are optimised for fast pixel transitions, so response times and ghosting will be as low as you will find on a LCD monitor.

That makes me think do I go 120hz instead of IPS, but when I saw IPS on my brothers LG one the pixels spring into life it looks soooo crystal clear. :D
