So, around 2 months ago, I decided to buy a BMW warranty for my 330i, as it has done 93,000 miles now, and 100,000 is the cut off to get a warranty by.

about 10 days ago, the clutch started slipping once it was a bit warm. I thought it may be a problem with the SMG system, but then thought it's probably the clutch as it's done 93,000 miles.

Anyway, took it to the dealership, they've had it for a few days. They said the SMG system is perfectly fine, but that the slave cylinder had failed.

They said they need to replace the slave cylinder, plus the clutch and some other bits as they are ruined by oil all over them. He said, also, there are errors logged for the cooling system, although it all looks fine, they will replace that also.

Slave cylinder is covered under warranty, so is cooling system, and the clutch and other bits are all covered as it is incidental damage from the slave cylinder :D

I asked out of interest, how much it would have all come to, he totalled up in his head and said £1,800 to £2,000 or so for everything!!

VERY GLAD I got the warranty only a few months back!

Can I just take this opportunity to ask - do any of the other manufacturers offer a warranty service anywhere near as good as BMWs?

I understand from Gibbo's threads that the Porsche one is quite decent (although quite strict with the 100-and-something-point-check, the servicing etc.) but what about on the other makes? Or are they generally not worth the paper they're printed on and will try to BS at every opportunity?

Just wondered, t'is all.

Mercedes warranty is pretty comprehensive, but hugely expensive.

The Merc Warranty redefines the concept of expensive.

The BMW one is excellent - and well priced if you catch it at sub 60k miles. Over Clocker isnt correct though, you can still buy the policy at over 100k miles. Infact there is no mileage limit at all - all that changes with mileage is the price and level of policy available.

I could, if I wished, still take out a BMW Warranty on my 530i for example. It's about £1k a year, though.

I wish I could have a BMW warranty.

My driver's window hasn't been winding down for a while now, and then today when I tried to open it there was a bang, and now it opens and closes fine.
I'm dreading the day it gets stuck open :(

Mind you, that probably wouldn't have been covered anyway. Could've been hand regarding the £1500 of other costs though.
And the imending failure of the cooling system.

Ive just bought an e350 coupe, still has 12 months manufacturers warranty. Extending this via MB would cost circa £1650 per year. Same level of cover via warranty direct would be £600!

its about £460 a year on my e92 335D comparison :)

It's £1k for a E60 530d sub 60k

(comprehensive, no excess, give or take)

Yes, its oddly priced. It's priced based on model series not engine/trim.

You therefore get the odd situation where a 318d and a 335i both cost £540 a year for the top whack cover, yet a 520d and a 550i both cost £913 for the top whack cover...

It's absolutely mad. Why people pay the MB price I have no idea - I can only imagine their average clientele are elderly and don't know to shop around!

Because the actual bills a Merc can generate are even higher?

I was tempted by the idea of an E320 or something but the level of bork in those things is just not funny. I don't mind fixing a nice car every so often but it just seemed like a relentless world of crap 4 figure bills.

How can WD offer essentially the same cover for 1/3 of the price?

The W212 appears to be fairly reliable so far - there was an injector recall on the 4 pot diesels, but overall the model seems to be one of their more reliable lines. I've only had mine for a week so maybe I shouldn't comment yet!

Firstly good result on the repairs front, that would have been upsetting to the old wallet if you didn't have that warranty.

I'd also like to know this. I'd assume the premium marquees such as BMW, Merc, Jag etc. all provide a good service but as I'm not likely to be able to get one of them in the near future do any of the other (should I say lesser?) brands offer an equally good warranty service at a reasonable cost? Whilst we're at it are third party warranties ever any good either?

As I've been hanging around on the SLK forums for a while (handbags!) it appears MB's Tier1 warranty is very comprehensive, with many on there saying how little trouble they've had getting things fixed.

Sadly, its expensive, £1500-2000/year for an SLK55.

WarrantyWise/WarrantyDirect are cheaper because they're wriggle out of things. In all honesty, if I couldn't get a reasonably price manufacturers warrantly, I'd just set up a slush fund instead. If you don't need it, its a nice bonus.

How can WD offer essentially the same cover for 1/3 of the price?

They can't they say they offer the same level of cover but they don't and have many clauses to get out of claims. I found out the hard way when they only covered £235 of a £1350 claim. The BMW warranty would have covered it all.

Well I've just had my X5 in for what I thought was straightforward warranty work only to be told BMW warranty dont want to know...
Bought the car last year with a BMWAUC warranty. Not long after I had the self-levelling suspension compressor changed under warranty. Recently the car has been a bit iffy on left hand corners so I suspected either bushes or airbags. Took in to local dealers who diagnosed the fault as being OSF air suspension bag. They ordered the part and checked with BM warranty division who said no on 2 counts
1) The car is over 60k miles so warranty is out.
2) Air suspension bags are 'wear and tear' items

Firstly I bought the car with 62k on the clock and they had already accepted the claim for the compressor so they had set their own precedent there. As for the bag being a wear and tear item thats total BS in my opinion. i was once a mechanic myself so know the score....
Both the repairing dealer and the one I bought it from were both flabbergasted at the stance the warranty dept were taking. Phoned them up and tried to reason with them but no joy.
Whats worse is that i have just had a warranty renewal notice through the door for £900 for another year. They can go and **** themselves if they think im paying that after the 'service' i've had. Its a shame as in the 10+ years I've owned BMW's I have had a great experience with the cars. Now I feel this single incident has tarnished all that... I cant fault both dealers as they were both rather helpful but BMW warranty can go take a jump.

So I'm now having to repair the car myself. BMW want £600-odd quid for a complete new front strut and bag. i can get both new OS and NS struts from the states for less than that.

So, the moral is that the BMW Approved Used Car warranty (which is supposedly a premium product) actually has more holes than a seive. Disappointing.....really disappointing..

On another point, if you dont keep the warranty up you cant get it back...ever. Porsche were mentioned earlier...their scheme is different. Even if a car is out of Porsche warranty you can have it checked by a dealer and re-warranted by Porsche (after any remedial work is carried out). A really enlightened and grown-up way of dealing with things IMHO. Always feel a bit sad that 'the bairn' was too big to fit in the back of a 911(i did try to shoehorn her in but to no avail :( )

Thats pretty awful - didnt the dealer submit a goodwill claim? I once had a claim rejected due to wear and tear - they told me the propshaft was wear and tear as my car had 140k miles. One letter later and they... changed the propshaft under warranty.

The AUC warranty should cover virtually everything within the first year. I'd be kicking off, IMHO.
