...call an iPad a tablet computer?

My previous firm was selling Paceblades and Acer tablets from 2003 onwards. Then I gathered that Apple got onto the tablet market a couple of years ago. Recently, we had extended family around, my uncle showing his gadgets to Granny and she really got into Angry Birds. She was like, is this a computer? I said it's a tablet computer and my uncle, hearing what I said, went all FUUUUUU raeg (yeah rage spelt raeg), "it's not a tablet computer, it's an Apple!"

So yeah, use your words carefully around Apple users :p Just wondered if anyone else had similar?

Almost everywhere does seem to separate iPads from general tablets though, so to the general consumer they probably think they're different. I agree though it's a tablet plain and simple.

Your uncles talking BS. The iPad is a tablet made by Apple, just like the Xoom is a tablet made by Motorola etc.

No, but if anyone said that to me they'd get a swift blow round the head with my keyboard.

Oh and I hope you set him straight. I'd let him rage for a little before showing him up. It's harsh but strangely satisfying....

With the ipod it's different though as the ipod was an almost universally taken up product which differed from all other mp3 players particularly with regard to itunes and the DRM files the ipod played. With an ipad it's a lot more similar to everything else and it hasn't been adopted anywhere near as widely (i.e. it would be okay to say that a non-apple mp3 player was still a person's 'ipod' whereas you could hardly say that someones Xoom was their ipad)

so my iphone is just a phone? :(

And there we have it ladies and gentlemen. :)

Irritates the **** out of me that people continue to perpetuate the Apple utopia. Even these forums put the iPad and iPhone as an Apple product ahead of what they actually are; a smartphone and a ******* tablet; why can't they be discussed at length in this forum instead of the Apple one?! Sure they rock, I love my Touch and am even considering adding an iPad to my gadget harem at some point and an iPhone could be my next phone (holding out to see if a 5 is released) but at the end of the day they are just a bunch of circuits with a display...

Because to be honest, this forum is clearly dominated by Android, and the Apple forum has become iOS.

Hehe, it's like they expect their iPhone to perform fellatio of on them or perhaps act as a teasmade or a frigging therapist. "Hello siri. I'm feeling a little suicidal today. What should I do?" "Jump..."

That's a comment I disagree with. It might NOW be the case but only because iPhone/Pad users were herded into their own forum for their own protection. :)

Thanks guys! Also, what Cu3ed said about the MP3 player vs iPod dilemma.

I just didn't want Granny to be brainwashed by the marketing. Just told her the pros and cons of tablets and OS options - mainly iOS, Android and Windows.

The iPad is the market leader and was the first of a new generation of tablet computers, that is where the name comes from and why many people will call a tablet an iPad.

Same goes for the iPhone, much like the iPod before it. People who don't know any better adopt the names of things that are familiar, like Biro as mentioned above for example.

This stuff isn't really difficult to understand, it's funny how upset people get over it though (like -BA- for example).

From what I remember there were tablet PCs (laptops with swivel screens) which came out a year or two before the 'ipad'.
