Nintendo are one of the oldest players in the home console market, they do know a thing or two about getting video games consoles into living rooms and into peoples pockets with handhelds.
You’ve only got to look at the below figures -

Out of the top ten best selling consoles including handhelds, Nintendo hold 5 positions, Sony 4 and Microsoft has 1. The figures speak for themselves. Nintendo is a household name, the fact they have got this gens best selling games console that can barely look decent at 480p is testament to how creative and good at knowing what the market needs, when others didn’t. Lets face it, the Wii whilst being ancient tech did have that ‘ooo lets have a go’ factor that even older parents could join in on. You can’t put a price on that, parents playing video games with their children will always sell… The Wii figures show you just how true this is.
Many years ago they got caught napping when Sony developed the Playstation (there is another story to this) and Nintendo felt Cartridges would be the way forward still. Sony had Nintendo clearly on the ropes, even Microsoft got the better in someway, however with the wii Nintendo clearly demonstrated they do indeed know what they are doing.
I don’t think the Wii U will be a failure, the tablet controller itself with its built in VMU type display, compatibility with Wii controllers and 1080p display, and the fact it’s the first of the next gen consoles to be announced it will leave Sony and Microsoft again looking to try and replicate with Nintendo are doing..
Still many gave up with the Wii after the initial wow factor whore off as they just got bored of the selection of titles, if Wii U can combine the fun factor of Wii, but bring mainstream core gamers into the mix as well as causal party gamers etc, and the tablet controller that can be used whilst the TV is in use, then I can’t see how it’ll fail.
Be interesting to see how ‘well’ it does actually sell, but I must admit, a Wii type console that is more powerful then an xbox360 or Ps3? I mean, we all have a soft spot for Mario or Mario kart, it does look promising…
Oh and the gamecube wasn’t really a failure, it did feature some rather excellent games.
