want a little more than 2gb so thinking do i need 4 or 8 gb...ill be using it basically as a file server for media mainly....not gonna be backing up major files or anything...if so what memory do you recommend....thanks.

Seeing as ocuk had 8gb of ddr3 for around £20 the other day, I can't see the point of buying smaller quantities.

BTW, my N40L is running the standard 2GB, running plex media server, NZB downloads, FTP Server etc and its fine even sending 26GB MKVs across the gigabit network.

Which OS are you using?

My Microserver is running Linux, acting as a file server and has 1GB RAM. No need for additional memory. There's even room for an XP VM. ;)

i am not sure yet can make my mind up...xp vm whats that....what version of linux you using....i was thinking of freenas to start with to see what its like but want to get more out of the machine...learn as i go along lol ...

XP Virtual machine running under Virtualbox. I am running Debian Linux. I doubt you'll need more than 1GB RAM if you're going to run FreeNAS. Start off with 1GB and add more at a later date if you notice a bottleneck.

Running FreeNAS 7 (32 bit version ) on mine and with 3GB of RAM it zips along ... :)
