How comfortable would you guys be if your colleagues knew how much money you were on?

Yesterday one of my colleagues let slip she knows how much I'm on in a joking way by saying something to the effect of 'you should do it as you're on more money then me.' I asked how she knows and she said she was told by another colleague, who was sitting with us at that moment. This third person indicated that she was annoyed this had slipped out so I can assume it's not just a joke.

Since then it's been really bothering me to the point of feeling very angry. It would be completely unacceptable to open my pay slip behind my back and pass it around the office so how is this different? It feels like an invasion of privacy and these people have no right to know this information (certainly without my consent), spread this information or use it against me in a work situation.

So what do you think OcUK; am I being a drama Queen or should I take this to my line manager? (or C - punch both women in the ovaries)

I dont get the issues with sharing pay. What's so bad about it.
I like people sharing pay, gives you a good idea what different jobs pay when applying.

Oh and drama queen.

Worst "I earn more than my colleagues" thread ever! :p

You're on more money than one or more of your colleagues, get your **** out in the office tomorrow and make sure they all know who is boss!

I wouldn't want all my colleagues knowing my salary, only one does and that's because she has become a friend. It's not really anyone elses business.

Colleagues knowing your pay when your pay is performance related isn't a particularly great idea as it tends to make employers want to just pay everyone the same to avoid friction.

Problem is that it's not sharing, it's stealing - or at least copyright infringement as they didn't take the data :p I don't know how much they are on and this information was obtained in a deceitful and unfair way.

Also, we aren't in the same job role so I'm entitled to more :D

The problem with everyone keeping their pay a secret is that sometimes it means you might be getting paid less than you should be, without really knowing it.

It's something that actually plays into the hands of the employer, more than the employee. For example, if you knew that your co-workers in the same role were getting paid more than you, it would be a great bargaining tool for a raise.

I wouldn't have a problem with it. In fact I think it'd be a good idea for all employees to know each other's pay - people earning more than they're worth will be challenged and people who earn less than they're worth will get rewarded. Why wouldn't companies want that to happen?

Because an individual may deem themselves worthy of more money and the company genuinely may not agree. Pay is usually related to performance and length of service/experience so not all employees should be paid the same just because they are in the same role. Not discussing pay avoids any chance of tension or resentment between employees or the employee and employer.

I make just over £500 working part time, I just don't understand why people are so weird with a thing over salary :/

Before yesterday it never really bothered me and I'm surprised at how angry I've got.

I just don't like the idea of how this information could be used and how I have no control over it.
