What does everyone think of current gpu prices

Enthusiasts rigs are always in a state of flux, i.e never stop building and working up the ladder until you have your perfect setup. This never happens, as there's always newer faster stuff around the corner, so you upgrade again. At the end of the day (you go to bed) It's a hobby, and everyone is at a different stage of it for whatever reason, just enjoy it.

Good post here and summed up your reasoning for buying. You hit the nail on the head with the "It's a hooby" part for me. I love my comp and love tinkering with it. Also I love my Golf clubs and love adding to them. Also I love my beer and love getting drunk.

It is our lives and we do as we want, so long as we don't offend anybody on the way.

If somebody wishes to buy 3 7970's/7950's/7990's it is up to them. I would never assume that purchases will put them in debt or they will be spunking the student loan. If it is something they enjoy doing (gaming/editing/pron watching) and it makes them happy....sweet and good luck to them.

If ATI are raking in the coins with the fastest GPU then good on them (cheeses me off cos personally I want a, or 2 7970's now but can't afford it yet). I, in myself truly believe that the price they want is a little to much per performance but my opinion does not make me correct and depending how the market plays out between now and the 28th of this month will make me decide what I will do.

I agree, it's faster than the 580GTX and is priced accordingly. Everyone here should know by now that flagship cards cost top dollar, and flagship cards that take the crown of fastest single GPU cost even more. It's never been any different, and I really don't understand what all the whinging gits in this thread are crying about. If you don't like the price then buy another card, it's not like there isn't any cheaper good alternatives.
 
I would say it's overpriced, and that is mainly due to the GTX580 being overpriced. The whole top end 6xxx series and GTX5xx series has remained relatively static price-wise over the last year, instead of getting cheaper in anticipation of the new 7 series. As a result of that, instead of occupying the 6xxx series' price point AMD have just stuck a massive premium on top of it to compete with the GTX580's inflated price point. Doubtless it will come down as more of the range is released, but it still does stink to high Heaven.

Could I afford one? Yes. Do I want to buy one? No, people can cite whatever reason for buying the card but it does show either an unhealthy obsession with computer hardware (Early adopters' syndrome) or that you aren't bothered being ripped off.

Nope, the 2600ks replacement would have been the i7 8XX series, such as the 860.

The 2500k replaced the i5 7XX.

The 79XX is just priced ridiculously, the 7950's a 250 quid card at the VERY highest.

I disagree. I brought a gainward rampage 700 4870x2 about 3 years ago when it was the fastest card on the planet , only been out a few weeks for £330 ... At todays prices it would be at least double that ...
 
i dont think they'll drop this year, but you might be able to get one from EBAY Hong Kong, it's a risk you take, but you might be ok

It's hardly more money than sense either, it's just a case of having enough money and not being overly fussed.

It's rinse and repeat stuff, every time the new gen is released, forum posters violently foam at the mouth at how expensive the cards are. Everyone who buys one is a stupid idiot, and must have no concept of money.

Right...because maximising profit is a simple case of extracting as much money out of per item sold, and sales volume has nothing to do with it?

If AMD was selling the 7950 3GB at just under £300, they'd probably be shifting 3-5 times the amount of what they are selling now...and if they got no problem keeping up the supply, selling more cards at £50 less would be likely to generate them more overall profit with the higher sales than selling much lower quantity at £350.

And then there's the 'timing' factor to considered. Nvidia's new cards are available soon...and if they do release a card at £300 and beat the 7950 3GB by a fair margin, people wouldn't buy the 7950 3GB even if the price was dropped to £280.

Thirdly, with the current high price, AMD is actually pushing the people that originally planning on upgrading to the 7950 away (since it is above what they were expecting to pay), and encouraging them to wait for Nvidia to see if the field is greener on the other side (excuse the bad pun), and defeat the the purpose of them rushing their cards out to beat Nvidia to the market.

What are the chances of the 6950/70 series seeing a price drop within the next few months?

Also find it interesting that another large internet retailer has the sapphire 7950 for £347.99 and they have had 47 in stock for the last 9 hours lol. AMD, these new prices ain't happening, drop em.

This is exactly what is happening with me. I was ready to upgrade, but this new pricing strategy from AMD is making me wait for Nvidia and I am an AMD fanboy lol.

AMD had a real opportunity to stick it to Nvidia, they have superior technology and a massive head start. Had they come in at the right price they could have taken a HUGE chunk out of potential Nvidia sales. I really don't understand what they're trying to achieve here? Maybe trying to recuperate the money they lost from faildozer?

AMD aren't idiots*, they know what they are doing. If the price needs to be dropped, then I'm pretty sure they will do it.
Maybe some of the armchair pricing experts should send their CVs into AMD, sounds like they need your help!

Can't wait for the extreme whining to begin when Nvidia release their new cards and they aren't free.
Who knows what will happen come the next generation, if manufacturers aren't paying users to use their GPUs. The world will probably collapse with the anger and negativity.

I saw that

I watch GFX sales on new releases and you can genrally press F5 on your browser and see stock disappearing.

47 in stock still lol
 
I think that we got spoilt with the previous prices for GPU's tbh, and now we are starting to see a gradual return to the hazy days of upto £500 for a top of the range card, whether it is single GPU (much easier, less issues) or going X-Fire/SLI.

I must admit here, I did go for a 7970, but only because my other system was going on 3 years old, and ordered it as part and parcel of a new rig. If I was shopping for just a GPU upgrade.......I would probably wait for keplar, and then decide which way to go

Quite a milestone for myself, as I used Nvidia cards for many, many years

I paid a little more than that, for my XFX 4970X2.

I agree wholeheartedly that current cards are grossly overpriced.

I'm sure Nvidia will release a good contender and slot it in to replace the current line up's price range. Forcing AMD to drop significantly depending on performance.

Just makes me lol at people moaning about a luxury item costing luxury prices (wonder if they have an iPhone or an iPad?).

i dont care of price i have 600 pounds at the moment i just neeed gtx keplar most powerful single gpu not dual gpu

i dont know in uk but here in georgia its not usa state

i can buy anything directly from usa with just 7$ kg shipping and with no wat adding in my country

so only 610 will cost my radeon 7970 double xfx version

so uk is much near to usa than my country

so search and u will all definetly find best ways to get ati

for me atis is just junk for their perfect drivers

its good only for benches
