Well as in the title, my launch day 60gb has finally bit the dust.

Killed not by a hardcore session of gratuitous gaming, but by troll hunter on bluray :rolleyes:

I've currently followed the guides on youtube and have the old girl in pieces all cleaned up (just need to borrow a heat gun from work tomorrow) and I was wondering if anyone here has tried to revive any of their duff hardware?

If anyone has tried it how did you get on?

I did have a backup, but I can't find it.:confused:

So I'm hoping to resurrect my console so I can make a fresh backup before replacing the console with a 160gb. Into which I'll bung my 320gb hdd.
 
I managed to get my old 60gb going via the heat gun etc, but be warned it will only a temp fix so get your data off then buy a new console.

You do know, you're in the Console section?

And you are completely and utterly 100% correct, 'gaming' on a console designed primarily for said purpose is obviously not 'real gaming' at all.

there is a service on ebay that will pickup your ps3 and drop the same model albeit refurbished at the same time, may be worth looking into, although they do not accept ones which have been tampered with or had a heat gun, etc used on them.
 
Look at fixing it yourself using a heatgun. May be able to get it working long enough to get your data back if its not backed up. It's a simple enough process, if you can build a PC you can do this. (i did it on my broken PS3 before i built my first PC).

Mine lasted about another month after I fixed it. Got my data back and that was all that mattered :)
 
I feel your pain, I switched on my phat yesterday evening and it would not read any discs. I tried that hidden menu thingy and still nothing, so frustrated I went straight on the net and bought a slim.

I have had it for a while, probably three years but I have not used the bluray drive much at all as most of my gaming has been with the PSN downloadable titles and I have never watched a bluray film with it either.

I hope the slims have better reliability.
 
My original 60gig suffered the same fate. I was lucky enough for the PS3 to stay on long enough to get everything I needed off it without having to do the heat gun trick.

Just bought a new slim PS3 instead. However, couple of months ago, I was bored and thought I'd try fixing it. The heat gun method is simple and you won't have any trouble. You can just follow a 30 minute youtube video if needs be.

It is working again, but I don't really play games on it, I use the new one for that. It occasionally gets used for bluray's and dvd's and copes for now. I'm sure with any sustained use it would die again.

I fixed my mates and I told him to take it easy for a little while..... he had a HEAVY session on COD that very night and it did it again.

You got that the wrong way round.

My original 60gb has died now aswell. I done the hairdryer solution (similar to heat gun i assume) which got it working temporarily but have just been and got a brand new one from Morrisons for £150 :)
 
Common fault PS3 blu ray drive no longer reading. You can get a DIY laser kit however if you can find a PS3 slim with a 160GB driver for sub £150 know what i'd do...

I'd just sell the old PHAT as broken and buy a SLIM.

i've had three refurb units from Sony, one on warranty, one I paid for and the third I got for free as I complained bitterly about how poor it is that PS3 blu ray drives die, three broken consoles within a year was simply not on IMO.
 
Well I've run a heat gun over the main board, just have to wait till this evening to see if it works.

As long as it lasts long enough for me to make a back up I'll be happy. Should be picking up a new unit tonight.

Although can't say I'm best pleased about replacing it with an inferior item (as in no card reader, fewer usb ports and no backwards compatiblilty.) Nor am I pleased with the fact my other older consoles have out lasted it, including my nes :rolleyes:

Tell me about it. I've had NES, SNES, Dreamcast and PS2 all last longer then a PS3...

Although my Ps1 was known for drive issues, I had to mount my Ps1 on its side to get it to read discs after a while of 'long' use..

The Slim PS3 is actually less power hungry, quiet and slimline however the lack of USB ports to just two isn't so good, and it you was using the PS2 features on your old PHAT PS3 then you'll miss this as well...
