How hard is it to obtain a pump-action shotgun (legally?)

I will assume you don't live in the countryside then...
I live in the Peak District mate, thats enough countryside for me.
I only put Sheffield because it's easier for people who don't know where Dronfield is lol
Cant shoot clays with a single pellet rifle (or not easily) plus range and speed it would be a nightmare .
Air rifles are fine for short range vermin control . rabbits/pigeons at a rough max range of 35 yards . Its is not legal to shoot anything bigger in the uk with an air rifle .
Target shooting is fine once again up to a max of 50 yards (yes i know they can shoot further but not by much ) Most people who shoot target rifle (unless rimfire) are shooting over 500 yards .
And on the zombie question a rifle would be usless unless picking them off at long range .. would much rather have a shotty up close . Pump is fine and faster to load than a side by side (but not as fast as a semi auto ) there not much louder than a normal shotgun . legal capacity in the uk on a sgc is 1 up the spout and 2 in the tube . can get 12 shot on a fac if u have a good reason

Why do they need to convince you? If I had my way, everyone would be legally allowed to have a firearm at home for home defence.
Suppressed guns are still loud, very loud actually.
There are few guns that can be "silenced" to a point of you being able to shoot someone and people around you not knowing where it come from.
Rifles are a different matter.
as for crossbows you probably want to go with the PSE 10/15(i)'s.

35 yards with an air rifle? lolololololololol. sorry. Try looking at some newer models my 23 year old lightning could do that and the spring is about 15 years old. if it was a brand new spring then double it easy.

TBH I'm not worried about Zombie Apocalypse I'm more concerned with the state of the economy, possible pandemics, Nuclear War and most importantly Raptor attacks in any event a Shotgun wouldn't be my weapon of Choice I'd prefer a fireproof suit and some Napalm after all nothing can catch you while you're on fire! ...unless said assailant is also on fire... I need to re-work my thinking!

As it has been mentioned anyone can get a shotgun licence providing they have not been in prison, have been convicted of certain crimes or there is no medical grounds for refusal (like believing in a coming zombie apocalypse).
An FAC is completely diffrent much much more involved, I have a friend with a .17HMR and a .22LR, every time he gets a new bit of land to shoot on it needs to be cleared for use for the type of round he is using.
OP stick to playing L4D.

The top bit is not entirely true. A subsonic bullet like a .22 with a decent mod will be almost silent from a couple of foot away. Even the firing of a .17hmr is very quiet, it's the SS crack that makes lots of noise, although to a person who does not know what it is wouldn't put it down to a gun shot.
.22's and .17's wouldn't be my choice *IF* zombies attack but feel free to use them and die

I was not talking max range i was talking about effective range . Most responsible shooters would keep vermin kills at around 35-45 yards max .
When doing FT we had a bell out at 100 yards and in comps had the the odd knockdown at 75 yards but 99% of shooting was done under 50 yards .
Just because guns have got better of the years does not mean they have got more powerfull . legal limit is still 12ftlbs so other than better quality pellts and being abit more accurate the range has not really changed .
.22 rimfire sub is nearly silent and is really only the noise of the action . .17hmr is a fair bit louder it with a moderator . Anything centrefire is load but moderator takes the edge of it . Silenced shotguns are still loud.. its all a comprise really for shooter comfort and trying to cause minimum distruption when stalking .

TBH it matters little.
Unless you can put the .308 in the same place as the .22, you're knackered.
The .308 is heavier, so you can carry less. It's louder, so harder to suppress.
Me, I'd take a semi-Auto Ruger of some variety...for my 'long' 15 round box mag of .22, and go for headshots. You get a LOT of bullets for 1Kg in .22
For short range work... hmmm.... Beretta 92F couldn't really be faulted. Reasonable stopping power, low recoil, high mag capacity.

Vermin control, game shooting, wildfowling, target shooting, competition, clay pigeon, etc. etc. All valid reasons.
It's the unlicenced ones you need to worry about, rather than the decent law abiding citizens who are the ones that generally apply for a licence.
