Gibbo are the 7950's actually selling?

Its called discussion.

In a Hardware forum.

Yes but in EVERY bloody 7900 related thread there you are Easy, with your little sign saying the "End is Nigh" standing on the corner of every thread.

Yes the cards were better value last year. From a company (AMD) that had the second fastest card (6970) and that is tied with the GTX 570 even, AMD done well with their cards. Now AMD have the fastest card out and are charging more than they usually want. EasyRider, read this, they now have the fastest card (AMD), they are now charging a premium for this. Simple and if you can't get your brain around that then it's best we don't speak to one another as I have little patience for people that has to say the same thing over and over and over again without taking what anyone has to say on board.

Practically Easy, if you keep on posting the same bs over and over, I'm going to have to stick you on ignore. I usually like to see what you have to say but you're like a child raising his/her voice to be heard as the initial "HERE I AM" scream was ignored. We get your point, you're so unhappy about the prices. When Nvidia bring out their cards we'll see what happens. The GTX580 prices have NOT shifted at all. Why is there not hundreds of posts and threads from you saying "HOW DARE YOU NVIDIA".

I love it how all these people on here claim to know more about the market than AMD all of a sudden, just because they can't buy stuff at the price they want.

Who cares if they are selling? They WILL come down in price.

Patience.

Lets be REALLY clear, no card, EVER has had the lower binned model beat the previous gen OPPOSITION card or their own card by 100%, EVER. So that is where you come across ridiculous, truly ridiculous.
The 8800GTS wss capable of 2x previous gen ATI performance at high resolution and settings. However, most next gen stuff is only 40-50% faster, with the hobbled top parts (GTX260's, GTX470's, 5850's etc) being 20-30% faster than the previous gens fastest card.

Maybe some people are forgetting / ignoring the fact that the GTX 580 3GB is ~£400, The HD7950 3GB can be had for £335, its as quick at stock speed, uses less power and so runs cooler and overclocks better for £65 less.... Not what I would call terrible value.

If the HD7950 3GB can sell for £335 then I expect we will see the HD7950 1.5GB for £280-£300.
Problem with that is the 1.5GB versions is that they ain't available till sometime in March, so by then it would be far too close to the launch of the new Nvidia cards. And I don't see the point comparing it to the GTX580 3GB, as most people don't think the extra VRAM is worth the premium, consider they offer next-to-none performance increase for 1920 res. Fact is that there isn't a 1.5GB 7950 available for under £300 right now at this moment. I don't know what is AMD smoking, think it is wise to launch the 1.5GB version at 1 month or more's time.

I have a question as follows:

What percentage of AMD's profit is made from the sale of high end graphic cards? Meaning whether they sell them for £299, £350, £400 or £500 does it actually make much difference to them overall? Can they afford to sell these cards at a high price as either way they know they will break even, or make a profit no matter how small. Due to the enthusiast market always willing to get their wallet outs no matter what in sufficent numbers to make them money to cover their costs. Or do they need to sell them cheaper to break even and make profit in the long run for the very survival of their company?

I ask as many people are discussing things from the cost perspective and I just wondered how much this actually contributes to AMD overall in the first place.

Michael

£299 would have been the sweet spot for the 7950 and £399 for the 7970.

AMD are trying to claw as much as possible from the 79xx series before the new NV cards come out. They are pushing the "fastest single card" to try and tempt sales. The problem is there is to little gain from upgrading from the last gen of cards and most people that would be interested in upgrading have an AMD 69xx or NVIDIA 5xx and have realised it's not worth it unless you have uber res or multi screens.

AMD are trying to tempt too small market by pricing the cards so high. If the 7950 was £299 even I would have snapped one up and I imagine they would have sold a hell of a lot more.

I think the cards will hit those pricepoints fairly sharpish TBH, I'm not saying I agree with the current prices, I'm just saying I understand them.

I don't see why AMD should have to provide a faster card then their competitors for less money. Nvidia don't appear to be blinking either and dropping their prices so why aren't people whining about them?

*Edit* I see someone just made the same point as me....

I'm not asking for competitors.
But I didn't know you couldn't give the number.
As far as I see it, the price I got my PCS+, was pretty much the best in the UK with free delivery, and that was here :p

Hinting at pricing or names is a no no.

If AMD dropped the 7950 to 290 or so I would buy one and I don't even need a new card as I only game at low res!

AMD missed the ball with this one and they are going to regret it big time. They have a head start on Nvidia and superior tech, they could have come in at a competitive price like £250-300 for 7950 making it a no brainer for everyone to upgrade! Imagine the market share they could have grabbed if they were appropriately priced.

Comparing it to something else that is ridiculously overpriced is irrelevant.

Funny that. When some reviews compared the 3GB HD7970 to the 1.5GB GTX580 nVidia fans went nuts saying its not a fair comparison (reasonable point at high resolution) so it is fair to compare 3GB to 3GB and that includes price.

Just because most people don't think its worth the price premium for the extra VRAM doesn't mean its fair to compare a 1.5GB GTX580 to a 3GB HD7950.

I do agree though, not sure why AMD haven't released the 1.5GB HD7950 yet, maybe production isn't good enough yet?

Would be nice to see Kepler in March aswell, but I don't we will.

lol just went onto another retailer on the web and their 7950 has already dropped to £334 from 350 yesterday. I have been counting how many sold and they have sold exactly 1 in the last 24 hours. This is hilarious!

i seen that to ;) , people dont like high price's when money is getting short in the uk . elec prices also on the rise again :(

They are pricing it where it belongs in the market.

The GTX580 3GB is overpriced but its aimed at an extremely niche market where people will pay ridiculous prices.

If the GTX580 3GB was cheaper then I'd expect AMD to lower their prices aswell but they don't really need to as the HD7950 is already cheaper, as quick, uses less energy, runs cooler and overclocks better. It already has the upper hand, well for the time being at least.

We've sold 11 in last 24hrs, not amazing, but steady sales. AMD have been informed of desired price points which need hitting. Whether they will do anything remains unseen.

Because in last 24hrs ZERO 580's and 570's have sold.

As such AMD may consider all is well as am sure that sales worldwide are still quite impressive and still more so for AMD if it has stopped punters buying the competing cards from NVIDIA.

Thankfully were now very low on stock on 580/570 and whats left we can just build PC's with, but it would be nice if NVIDIA dropped pricing.

They are appropriately priced though. Thanks to Nvidia.

If you had £500 to spend on a graphics card but were given two choices: 3GB GTX 580 or 3GB 7970. What would you buy?.

If you had £360 to spend and were given only two choices: 1.5GB GTX 580 or 1.5GB 7950. What would you buy?. (This is assuming the 1.5GB 7950 is affected by high resolution gaming due to 1.5GB)

They could have released the cards that low but why?. You wouldn't if it were your business so why expect AMD to do it?. Also I know the GTX 580 has been out for ages but that should be looked at as why are Nvidia NOT dropping prices to be aggressive towards AMD?. Why are Nvidia not dropping the GTX 580 1.5GB and 3GB cards so it makes the choice a no brainer?. If Nvidia dropped the price of the GTX 580s it could really hurt 7970 sales. Why are Nvidia not doing so?.

So am I fair to assume that Nvidia are missing the boat here?. Am I fair to assume that Nvidia's high pricing of their cards have led AMD to push higher for having the fastest card on the planet than they usually do?. It seems as it's all AMD's fault but people have either short or selective memory.

Of Course he wants one, but hes not silly enough to pay the daft prices AMD want that's all.

Yeah or pay the daft prices Nvidia are STILL charging for their year old card?. How about if Nvidia lowered their prices to compete with AMD as right now, pound for pound, the AMD card is better. Why have Nvidia not aggressively changed the pricing on the GTX 580s?. It would make sense to do so. Same price as the AMD cards but slower than 7970. Even better, the 7950.

So why are Nvidia, the company that plumps your pillows at night and brings you hot chocolate with little marshmallows in it, why have they not brought the pricing down?. Maybe if Nvidia didn't charge an extreme premium for having their top card we wouldn't be in this mess.

As I know you are mostly Nvidia orientated Locky (from postings over a long time), I don't expect an honest answer where Nvidia takes any of the blame for this but I hope I'm wrong.

well, it's not just AMD that need to listern, it's Nvidia, the 580/570 are going no where fast, with the next gen cards around the corner they need to start sifting these asap, can only mean a good thing for you gibbo - a nice big cut back :D

hey see my post where I quoted gibbo, nvidia need to slash the prices of the their current gen cards ie the 580/570.

Yes nvidia are to blame for the current set of prices along with AMD. for the record I got my cards around release time, but I pretty much paid half of what they was by playing the waiting game.

I'm not sure of the same game will work this time round, we will have to see.
