Your mission, if you choose to accept it!

It had a harsh life with the clutch?

Tbh if he is looking at only getting £3k for the s2000 I'd not bother, Keep it till after the wedding and if needs must change it then to something more suitable for you both.

Surely it's worth more than £3k ?

Might be a smidgen over, max 3.5k surely. Looking on auto trader the lowest is £3,690 although it's more miles, it's a year younger than mine.

Also, mine has a scrape on the bumper (no idea how it got there - came back to the car like it).

This. Unless it's a high mileage CAT D '99, then it should fetch more then £3k...

Have you thought about hanging on to it for a few weeks/months until the sun comes out? IIRC, soft top prices spike a little during the better seasons...

When's the wedding/bill due?

What's the spec/details?

Weddings in October, so bills are coming out all over the place!

It's a 99, with 83k on the clock. It's a good call about waiting for the weather though.

I didn't realise the S2000 was only worth £3k.

Truth be told I'd finance it some other way.

However I do believe in putting out the boat for a wedding. Nothing stupid like some people like you see, but it is one of the most important days of your life, not to mention a great gathering of people both new and old.

Good luck. :)

Thanks, appreciated.

It's nto going to be a big wedding by any means, so therefore not expensive. But we want it done right and therefore need some extra money.

Congrats on the engagement...I to have recently got engaged to my gf!

Have a look at MG ZT's...They seem to get very good reviews and also can get them cheap also. Alternatively the rover 75 equivalent!

Congratulations and thanks :) Not quite sure I fancy a rover!! :p

Pmsl, I love these thread where people can't just turn round and say 'no' to their gf/wife etc.

It wasn't her who suggested it, I'm doing this off my own back. But thanks for that.......

"WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH DONT JUDGE ME AND MY CHOICES I JUST WANT CAR ADVIIIICE."

Why did you even bring up the reason for sale/wedding/other TOTALLY irrelevant info then?

Selling it to fund a wedding is stupid.
Selling it irrespective of the wedding to free up pocket change is stupid.
Selling it for any reason other than an upgrade is, imo, stupid.

As Fox said, you net 3 grand, dump 1-1.5k into something else upfront plus additional for anything else it might need + time + hassle = LOLWAT?

To be fair to the OP, he's handled himself well and it doesn't look like that what this is.

If the sale would only liquidate a couple of grand, then I'd think it was a mistake, but it seems he's looking for a change anyway, ie what ever the fun replacement might be next year, it wouldn't be a 2 seater. Given that context, it doesn't seem so daft afterall...

Fair play for wanting to stand on his own two feet I say. I'd imagine that's something you might empathise with?

3k, what's wrong with it?!

If nothing, I'd be seriously tempted to take it away from you despite agreeing you shouldn't sell. :p

Totally uncalled for.

Is selling it in favour of something with rear seats / a bigger boot stupid?

Only ever upgrading is a nice ideal, but not always consistent with reality...

Fox has a fair point, but given the stated desire for something more practical, the change is more sensible than the idea of selling only to buy another S2K next year would be.

Some of the banter (that the OP invited to be fair) strays a bit too far. Some of the tubthumping 'men' in here are coming across as over-indulgent little boys.

Fair play to the real man trying to live within his means, and not just expecting the old man to pick up the tab for an unextravangant wedding.

When he will be buying something else in 12 months as a fun car that better suits his revised needs anyway, yes. I think it's a false economy to go through all the hassle for a pretty insignificant amount of cash saved.....

If he was putting away a decent amount of money away this would be a cost cutting exercise, but it is not.

If this was a practicality exercise then why change now, to change again in 12 months.

Endure the lack of 4 seats and a boot for 12 months, save cash otherwise and chop in the S against something else.

Wait till march. Will be worth more. Make sure you do the maths on any change. The insurance should be a lot cheaper too ?

I'd look at getting a cheap £500 to make it worthwhile. It sounds like you don't do many miles. Other option is a 22 month 0% credit card to pay for the wedding :D

Exactly, her old man has put down enough (paid for day + evening do + venue). I do want to contribute.

I do want a change and do require something more practical. have you ever tried to transport 15 footballs, two full kits, a medi bag, 12 bottles and a bag of cones / bibs in an s2000? It doesn't work well! ;)

The idea is to next year, pick up a car which has 4 seats and a boot, but also meets my needs for speed.

The idea this time around is to pick up something very cheap to unlock the money in the car and then stick what's left over into an account which can be the wedding fund.

It's not totally irrelevant info. If I came into the thread and said "I want to change my s2000, I want a £500 car just to use for a year" I would have been met with questions such as:

Why do you want to swap?
What will you gian for it?
Why do you need the savings?

So it's a totally relevant question. It's not about my choices, my choices are my own.

It's not stupid to sell a car to fund a wedding, it's not funding the entire wedding either.

Why can we down grade cars? Why can't I get rid of a two seater, in preferance for a 4 seater? With a boot? Does it matter that the car might be slower than what I have now, or in a worse condition? As long as it lasts for a year, and the money tied up in the car can be extracted, then what's the problem?

Come on Sin, we both have been around long enough to know how motors work.

3k, what's wrong with it?!

Nothing that I know of! :)

There's a scrape on the front bumper as mentioend above, no idea how it got there I came back to the car and it was like it.

The hood mechanically is fine, there's the tell tale signs of rubbing on the hood as what happens to all s2000's, but it's all fine.

Everything else is gravy.

Wait till march. Will be worth more. Make sure you do the maths on any change. The insurance should be a lot cheaper too ?

It's a good idea to wait till March, thanks for suggesting that.

Insurance will be a lot cheaper, currently paying over £100 a month, even with 7 years no claims and a reasonable postcode.

What's the score re service history / MOT? What are the wheels, and what are the tyres like? Isn't there a big bill (~£1k?) waiting to happen with S2Ks in general? Something to do with seized bushes? Have they been done?

TBH this thread would have probably taken a totally different tact if you'd said

I need to chop the S2000 in for something a bit more practical, I need 4 seats and a boot and also while i'm at it, i'd like to free up a bit of capital to put towards my wedding so something cheap and cheerful would be good

instead of

OCUK; Unfortuantely that time has come. I'm getting married! :( No need for the congratulations as to help pay for this I'm going to have to get rid of the s2000! Boooooooo.

which made it sound like the only reason you wanted to sell it was to raise money for the wedding...

Having sold my much loved and much missed e38 7 Series to fund a holiday, with a person I'm not even in a relationship with anymore, I'm not going to judge you for your reasons why.

Put it this way, I still rue selling it to this day and still hanker after another e38 but I don't regret the act itself and thoroughly enjoyed my holiday with her, memories that will stay with me for life.

I would imagine, your wedding day should be the above memory ten fold!

As for the car, drop £1k on a Mondeo, I did, worked for me, hated it after the 7 Series, as you'd expect.

:)

This message will self destruct in............. :D

It's due a service, however it has full service history. I have folders of paper work.

MOT has around 4-5 months left to run IIRC but before any sale it'll be put through.

Tyres are being fitted next week, as the fronts are low. New tyres going onto the back and the 6 months old rear tyres going ont othe front. (think they're sport contacts)

With s2ks you occasionally have the bushes seize, but I don't think that's the case on mine. I certainly haven't noticed anything.

It wasn't the only reason, which is why in the top I said:

hilly said:
ideally, something with a decent size (saloon size) with a decent boot and rear seats (for a change!).

As said, I need it to last me the year, so cheap parts and servicing. As once 2012 is over she'll have to suffer me getting something decent again (ecpect another thread!).

which was said in OP too.

Cheers mate, appreciate the response. Wasn't looking to spend a grand, more 700ish max, but I'll see what I can find.

You opened with "selling S2000 BOOOOO."

You cannot booooo your own decision made by no influence other than you just want to. This is crazyness :p:D

I can boo my own decision! I love the s2000 but I do need something more practical as mentioned above (need space for kits, balls, water bottles etc) and do need the money. However, of course I'll miss the car. You drive one so you know what they are like! :)

So I can boo it and I am booing it!! :D ;)
