Warning : BFG 8800GT OC - Nearly killed it

I'd report it to BFG.

Noy much they can do about it now, apart from apologise, but it might make them think twice about putting stupid stickers on where they are not wanted.

It might technically be classed as a design fault, as it was them who supplied it with the sticker on and not you adding it :D:D

Hey All,

SpeedFan reported my BFG 8800GT OC running at 114degC today.

There is a stupid sticker in the middle of the fan which is stuck on top of an Nvidia label on the fan, this had come off and jammed in the fan.

My idle was 90+ degC and I couldnt work out why, it was only when playing with the fan speed in RivaTuner that I noticed it wasnt spinning :(

COD4 kept crashing.

Things have cooled down and COD4 hasnt crashed again since :D
A similar thing happened to me with my leatek GT when the clear plastic protective film came off the fan heat sink. Luckily it made one hell of a noise when it happened so the card did not overheat. It is the dumbest thing to have these films on the cards.

My card has a plastic cover on it, is it worth removing it?

im having a few issues with this card....its completely freezing the screen after only a few mins of crysis :(
Doesn't sound like much fun. If its still a problem then tell us more infomation or maybe make a new thread to get support (and to avoid hijacking another users thread!).

Hi there

Noticed this a lot on 8800 GT's as they seem to ship with a protective film/sticker over the heatsink which can be hard to spot.

It obviously needs peeling off / removing before use or it will increase temperatures.

damnit, i snuck into your house and moved the label... didnt think to disable your rivatuner :(

I hate it when companies put needles stickers on their hardware. When I got my Gigabyte DS3 I had an 'all solid capacitor' stickers stuck across 2 PCI slots and when I peeled it off it left a load of crap behind. I spent about 10 minutes trying to get it out of the slots.

This card finally died yesterday, not bad considering it first overheated back in 2007.

Any ideas what would be a good replacement, needs to be able to drive two 24" panels at 1920 x 1080 either through DVI or HDMI.

It depends, what's your budget?

Any modern graphics card will drive 2 panels at that res, but it depends on what you want them to actually do. To play games at good FPS will need a more powerful card than running windows and doing e-mail for example.

Not looking to spend a lot, £150 max.

I rarely play games but the occasional COD, some racing sims and maybe Command and Conquer, nothing too fancy.

The exact same thing happened to me a couple of years ago....I had no idea untill I took the case apart to check for dust that the damned sticker had jammed the fan up.
I thought it was just a freak accident but apparently not. I have to say though after removing the sticker and using it now (wifes comp) it is still going strong.
