I just don't understand the appeal of steam?

Personally, I'd rather have my games on a disk, mainly because I don't have the greatest internet in the world.

Secondly, I buy 98% of my Steam games In the amazing sales they have, thus most of my games I have acquired for under a tenner, in fact the only games I've paid more than £10 for on steam are BC2 and Arma2+OA.

Thirdly, say I want X game, I will check Steams price, then fish around on the internet, whichever come out trumps, I'll buy, unless there is an upcoming Steam sale, in which case I'll wait.

Steam is amazing, just don't buy crap games and you won't feel bad about not being able to re-sell them. :)

The games I have in my Steam library are all the ones I can play more than once so i'm not that bothered.

Can imagine how steam might be frustrating for those living out in the sticks...

For the last 6 months, I've had 100mbit... for the year and a half before that, I've had 50mbit and for the 2-3 years prior to that, I've had 24mbit.

All with no usage limit.

So for the last few years, it's been rather quick to reload games and I haven't had to worry about bandwidth usage.

I have a 20Mb connection so large downloads don't really bother me, after reading this thread I think that I will be using Steam more often but mostly when the sales are on like today when I bought Skyrim and got The Elder Scrolls 3 & 4 + DLC for just over £30! That's only a tenner a game which to me is a bargain.

The main things I dislike about steam is that the client is starting to get a bit bloated with all the community stuff and all the extra bells and whistles when I just want a lightweight client. Also the steam sales have taken a big hit to my wallet, some of the stuff is just too good to pass up and I've ended up with so many games I've yet to finish, too many games too little time.

My games are all available from one place.
My games are all available from any PC.
My games are all available within minutes of reinstalling an OS
My games are all automatically updated to the latest version, saving hours of searching for and installing patches.
My games are often cheaper than retail, as Steam have regular sales

Plus customer support is quite good as far as my experience goes, been with Steam for about 5 years now when ever i have a problem the customer support has always come through.

Good all round community

Anyone who says "Steam Sucks" clearly needs to re-evaluate themselves.

Are there any games that force you to play through steam? For the most part I think players have a choice, which is the main thing. If you don't like steam then you don't have to use it (with a few game exceptions), but those who do like steam at least have the option of it. That's how all modern stuff should be done, let the consumer decide how he wants to consume media, either through physical means or digitally.

Another good point about Steam (sorry if someone else has arleady mentioned it) is that on many games it allows for an easier multiplayer experience. You can see when your friends are playing a game and join them with just a couple of clicks, or send a steam invite.

It just feels a like a much more integrated overall gaming experience to me.

For the people that complain about the prices, I was pretty pleased to pick up Skyrim over xmas for about £23 (pretty much the same as on the rainforest, I checked), and that was only released around November if I'm not mistaken?

Also it's becoming normal for games bought at retail stores to be activated on Steam (eg. Deus Ex:HR) which suits me perfectly as you can sometimes pick games up cheaper that way and still use them on Steam.

Steam makes me poor. :(

But yeah, I love it for many of the reasons mentioned above. Customer Support is pretty good as well, if a bit slow to respond sometimes.

It is by far the best game rental system available today

Customer support is a bit poor , methinks who ever reads their reports , English sure aint
their first language

I love Steam. When I re-format PC or whatever, It's like the first thing I install, I'll leave my monitor resolution at 400x400 and install Steam first. Drivers can wait! :p

You don't even need to install it - on a fresh install, I just double click Steam.exe on my D: drive, and we're good to go :)
