Is Gaming a sport.

Edit: Where you you stand on body buiding competitons? Is that a sport? Only thing I can think of atm that probably wouldnt be classed as a game, but is very athletic.

Good question. It has physical training and conditioning, but seems to be more akin to a competition than a sport. Ie, it's like the X-Factor or competing to grow the largest cucumber. So not a sport for me.

Weight-lifting on the other hand is a sport. You could argue that is well as being a competition there is a basic level of interaction between two lifters: if one lifts 10k, the other must lift 15k. They push each other until one wins. Same with pole-vaulting.

Ie, the performance of one competitor affects the performance of another (or can do).

Are there any sports where two competitors cannot affect each others performances?

No it's not a sport, sport's already been defined.. it's rugby, football, etc.

Gaming popularity has gone mental now tho, particularly with Starcraft II. Millions of people around the world recognise the term "E-Sport", and so.. it's an e-sport. Plenty of players are full-time gamers with teams, sponsors, and fans. There's plenty of cash in it for the best of the best.

Doesn't mean you have to see the value in it, I don't see the value in football, but I spend several hours every single day spectating Starcraft II. If you want to get down to the nitty gritty of what it takes to be an e-sport, come back to me when you have 300 APM.

I regularly watch tournaments with tens of thousands of spectators, 50k is very often hit. To put that into perspective, 60k is the capacity of the Emirates Stadium.

As in computer gaming? No, it's not a sport. It can be highly skilled and competitive activity (although not when I play) but it's not a sport, in much the same way that snooker, chess and darts aren't sports.

Snooker and darts are sports, chess isn't.

I don't see why some computer games shouldn't also be classified as sports.

Edit - seems chess is actually a sport... certainly no reason why certain computer games can't be.

This argument is simple to end,

Sports require you to sweat, and not because you just can't finish the level

Gaming is not a sport no matter if they have championships or trophies

I was going to say "Sports require you to be outside" but that doesn't work for swimming

Sports require you to sweat

except they don't necessarily....

and who's to say some fat gamer frantically pressing buttons on his xbox controller etc.. isn't going to sweat - its competitive, has a physical element and requires skill.

Again I'm going to have to disagree, I know that some people class both or even all three as sports but I think there's something wrong with a definition that includes them as sports. Games which involve a great deal of skill, sure, but not sports.

That doesn't count, sports require athleticism not chronic obesity

Well until I see an official definition, in my mind:

Sports - something you physically need to do; has an element of athleticism; generally alludes to physical prowess; often hand-in-hand with competitiveness.

Gaming by that sense is not a sport. It does however have its own competitive nature, as such is labelled as eSports, or Electronic Sports.

Sports require competition - gaming has competition - therefore electronic sports.

A sport is something which makes you fitter. The rest are all games.... including darts, snooker, tiddlywinks, chess (unless combined with boxing), and anything which involves sitting at a computer pretending to be doing something physical.

Waggling a mouse about does not count, otherwise masturbation would be a sport too. Now there's an Olympic event we could probably win.
