Anyone know a cheap place to get one of these? My left one has fallen off at some point (probably because I've been turning the bike upside down and resting it on the hoods :o) and I can only find them for like 10 quid on eBay.

Shimano 105 (5510 I think). Thank you very much.[/QUOTE]

ST-5510 name plate and screw
Code: 6GP 9807
Stock Situation: In Stock
SRP: £5.99

That's ordering it directly from Madison via a LBS. They should send it postage paid as a spare part so no postage involved for you or the shop.

The part number will be stamped on the side if you pull the hoods back. Looks like 5500/5510 to me though.

Good find Jonny!! Apologies Robbie, appears I was looking at the 9806 whole cover unit which was more expensive.

First thing I did this morning was fit a set of Crud RoadRacer Mk2. Took me a good while of faffing as I also had to apply protective tape to make sure it wasn't going to wear away any paint. Haven't ridden with it yet, but I'm happy with it as it was easy to fit (O rings and cable ties!). Now I can look forward to cycling through the rain and not getting a soaked backside!

After that, I had the unpleasant job of trying to resolve a sticky brake arm issue on my rear brakes. As simple as it sounds, I'm hopeless when it comes to bike mechanics, especially brakes, so this took quite a while.

What a rubbish commute in to work this morning.

First I had a flat (first time in a long time!) thanks to a good sized shard of glass. Next, the Presta valves on my two spares, and the punctured one, were coming apart. Lastly, my bike pump decided it better existed in two pieces.

Fortunately I was stopped near a friend's place so he was able to give me a lift home.

What I'm really perplexed about is why the Presta valves were coming apart on all my inner tubes. I've never had this happen to me before. The pump I was using screws on to the valve, and I was pumping them up slightly to get them into the tyre, before removing the pump and at this point the inner part of the valve unscrews with it. Perhaps the air pressure inside when pumped up would normally prevent it from unscrewing? Or is there something wrong with my valves?

Picture of it...

How often do you guys wash your padded shorts, assuming you're wearing them commando? My head is saying I should wash them everyday after the commute but my lazy side is saying they take to long to dry to make it worth washing them on a daily basis.

I'v had a couple of tubes do that. The little valve lock on the end was threaded on tighter than the core of the valve was threaded into the body. When i tried to undo the lock to pump up the tyre, the whole thing came out. Just need to work the lock lose. Put some lube on the threads and keep threading it in and out. Then screw the valve core back in as tight as you can.

I tend not to wear mine more than twice before washing them - and I won't ever wear the same pair two days in a row, as I like to air them for a while after using them. I will normally wear them only once before washing them, but that's because I have enough to get me through an entire week. Perhaps you could buy a spare or two? ;)

I'd imagine you'd stink like sweaty set of balls after a couple of rides.

Thanks very much. However I pulled the hoods back and found no part number, any chance you could tell me exactly where it should be?

I have no idea of the anatomy of the hood so I want to avoid damaging anything by pulling it too far etc.

My portable pump screws onto the valve, so when I go to unscrew the pump I could end up unscrewing the valve core too. I guess I'll just have to try to screw the valve core in as tight as I can and see if that works.

I should say it's only 10 minutes each way to work and back and with this weather I'm not getting sweaty at all, so surely I should get 2 days/40 minutes out of them before needing a wash?

I had the same problem, I just used a pair of pliers to tighten the valve core sufficiently to stop it being undone by the pump.

I would say so, but I wouldn't expect many people to publicly admit to wearing their shorts multiple times between washes :)

This happened to me on my Cervelo a few weeks ago. I was trying to unscrew the dust cover to check pressure before a Club run and the valve came off in my hand exactly like in your image. Apparently you can just screw it back in, but I threw mine away in a temper, so I'll have to put a new tube in there.

I don't use dust caps now. I don't overtighten the valve either, which is probably the cause of this.

For All KK Participants

Guys, please contact me with your mobile numbers (e-mail in Trust), so that we can coordinate on the day. Would be nice to say hello, even if we aren't riding together.

Dust caps

I don't use dust caps now.

I've noticed a lot of people saying this, in your case is it because you think the dust cap contributed to you over-tightening the valve? Or do you just not like the look / think it's necessary?

I'd have thought that dust caps would actually do a fairly important job of keeping gunk and rubbish out of the valves?
