Middle Lane Hogs

I either undertake or overtake them, sitting behind them flashing lights doesn't really get you anyway as they'll continue to be oblivious after you've passed them.

The Germans have got it right. They must be instructed through their lessons to turn back to the inside lane asap after overtaking because they all do this without fail - EFFICIENCY!!. No one sits in the outside or middle lane there. After all, who wants a BMW/Audi doing 100+ slamming into their rear?

I think half the problem is the mentality that we have a 'slow lane' and a 'fast lane'. This is simply not the case. We have a standard lane, and two overtaking lanes.

If people overtook cars on the motorway as they would in the countryside then there wouldn't be an issue. You wouldn't stay on the wrong side of the road once you have overtaken someone on a country road would you?

Well I think I've mentioned this already but really, in the UK its easy!

I've been out here in Dubai for just over a month, normally 4+ lanes on a motorway, inside lane is generally for slowish vehicles, the rest is a free for all. Find yourself in the outside lane to overtake then all of a sudden a huge lexus 4x4 or similar is practically touching your rear bumper flashing their lights furiously for you to gtfo. People carve whatever path they feel like, undertake, overtake, hard shoulder... its all fair game. How there isn't more accidents I don't know.

I will often stay in the middle lane for a while, simply because otherwise i would be constantly changing lanes after every vehicle in the inside lane.

Obviously if there is nothing coming up going slower in the inside lane i will always move into that and cruise there.

I just find that when the road is busy there is a constant stream of lorries/slower cars in the inside lane anyway.

or are you guys just talking about people that are constantly in the middle lane even though there is nothing in the inside lane in front of them.

I never used to really care, and now I really don't care - my ire now reserved for the freeway drivers who sit parallel at the same speed on cruise control causing a rolling blockage at whatever speed they decide to be at :p

I simply don't understand this; if it bothers you, then why do you give people the opportunity to do it? You can only get overtaken on the left if you are driving in the wrong lane.

Not always the case, you could be in the outside lane wanting to overtake the car in front of you and someone comes up the inside.

You have to strike a balance. Obviously changing lanes every 5 or 6 seconds is ridiculous, but if there is a gap of say 20 seconds and there are cars behind you waiting to get past then pull in and let them past.

And to those people wanting to get past, get past quickly and pull in yourselves. Don't just trundle past with 0.1mph speed difference, trapping the overtakee in the inner lane as they approach something moving slowly.

There is a massive lack of consideration on UK roads that you rarely see on the continent. IME if you get stuck behind an idiot hogging an outer lane on the continent, chances are the car will have a UK plate on it. Quite embarrassing really.

In which case they won't have anywhere to go, unless you have pulled out to overtake ridiculously early and you aren't going fast enough to complete the manoeuvre in a reasonable time.

Have you driven on a motorway in the UK? If I want to go 70 mph, and the outside lane is travelling at 65 mph, are you suggesting I slow down and travel in the inside lane? No, I'll join the outside one until I reach the speed I desire without having to overtake anything that may be coming up on the inside lane(s) and then pull back in as appropriate.

I've lost count of the amount of times there is a 10+ car length gap in the inside lane(s) and muggins in front of me in his repmobile is refusing to pull over, then some other idiot comes flying up the inside of me.

I tend to move into the middle lane at junctions, purely to allow traffic to join.

This isn't necessary unless there is a huge amount of traffic coming on. You can filter quite easily.

Unless of course there is a big speed difference, in which case fine.

I just maintain my speed if i am in the other two lanes, if I am behind them I will move to the right as soon as is safe to do so and overtake them.

I dont see a problem here.

Its not about giving the opportunity though , there is no wrong lane when u are cruising say 70-80 mph , either on the middle or fast lane , and suddenly the conditions ahead changes , the car which is behind decides it is smart and undertakes me .. and then moves into my lane .. im thinking what is the point ..

Doesnt happen much though , but when it does , the clenched fist goes up

Problem is, when you get on a busy motorway and multiply the number of drivers with the same attitude by 9182498942758 more cars and you get a continuous crawl of traffic in the middle and outer lanes. This annoys me when you see trucks with football pitch gaps between them on the inside and everyone else is nose to bumper in the middle and outer. Wouldn't happen in Germany.

EDIT: It isn't the "slow" lane!
