I'm not a designer, more a developer and I do back end systems but my client has said "have a go, it can't be any worse" so here it is. I'm torn between having gray links vs green.

What do people think? Is there anything horrible I can fix with what I've done so far?

Constructive comments only please, and I have suggested they get a graphic designer on the case, but they're not interested in that.

Green looks better, ties with the customers hippy crap.

The links need to be slightly further apart, visually they're cramped (at least on my iPhone)

Make integrated health clinic bigger, it's in the right place, but looks lost in the large white space, if it were larger it should fix that.

Generally look at it and try to even up the white borders around objects. It will stop it visually jarring but it's mainly nit picking here
 
Have to say, I'm not keen on the fonts used throughout for your text. Can't put my finger on whether it's font size or type or a combination of both, it just doesn't look "right".

Are you knocking this up in PS or is that a screenshot of the working website?.

The text is fully justified (both left and right margins) This could make the text look funny as random spacing between words to make the text box shaped.

Hi guys,

Thanks for the input it's actually quite refreshing that you guys were constructive rather than just throwing a load of abuse my way!

It was created in photoshop which I think explains the slightly odd line spacing and formatting. It's supposed to be Verdana size 12 I think, so on the actual html render it should be ok.

I was with you on the green links, as I personally think it lifts the page a little. However the client is set on gray :-( They have forwarded the design to their SEO team hopefully they will side with me on the link colour!

Any more feedback would be appreciated, and I'll keep the thread updated with any updates!
 
Unfortunately in our line of work you have to do what the client says, but don't take it as an insult! As we all know that most people don't know what looks good/right.

This is it, at the end of the day you can only give your best advice. It's up to them whether they go with it or not.

Years ago I would argue, but now as you say, they are the customer and sometimes you have to let them have what they want. UI is one of those things that people all (unfortunately) have an opinion on!

It's only a CSS style, so if they change their mind later it's only a 5 minute change!

No you bloody well don't.

Y'know, if you're a designer and you're finding that all your clients are ignorant micro-managing pains in the arse who don't listen... then maybe it's not the clients who are the problem.
 
Not sure how I provoked such a reaction there... I didn't say they were ignorant nor pains in the arse so I suggest you take a step back for a moment.

As a designer, we can only guide the client to making the right decision, hence when designing a logo, you tend to design 10 - 20 of them so they can get an idea of what it could look like. They select a few (if not one) and then you guide them from there.

At the end of the day, if the client pays you £600 for a design and they just say "I want a red square with a pink dot in the middle but with some fancy text", that is what you do.

I digress, I personally prefer the green one, but if the client wants the grey then so be it. At the end of the day, if they change their mind after signing off on it, then you can charge them for the change.

I still utterly disagree with what you're saying, but I don't want to derail boycee's thread any more than I already have done, so I'll leave it.
