How long did you drive your first car for?

Early 90s Ford Orion Ghia 1.6

6 months, went on to buy my 1.8 Focus MK 1.5 which lasted 5 years.

Orion was good to be fair, for £400. Had some dodgyness with the idle speed sensor which meant it cut out at junctions (I later fixed it) had to remove the thermostat completely to prevent overheating and the exhaust ended up being replaced after being held up by string.

I had mine a year, rover 214 the 1994 model.

Loved it but the gearbox went and i needed a car so swapped with my dads car while it got fixed.

I would have kept it longer but my dad gave it away about 2 months after it was fixed.

1996 Ford Fiesta 1.3LX kept it for 7 years before it eventually rusted to death, it covered 44k of pain free motoring absolutely brilliant car.

1992 K reg Toyota Starlet 1.3 with injection :P, Given to me by my granddad, was a great car to learn in, had some real umph to it, Worked on it for ages to get it up to scratch then 2nd MOT it all fell apart, so scrapped it, Wish I had kept it knowing now I would have a job and be able to get it all sorted as I loved it, had real "character" K541 OHC or "KOCH" to my friends and family.

Replaced it with a soulless 1.2 Corsa.....that is ok, but not the starlet :(

My first ever car was an Audi Coupe 5 cylinder, can't remember any more details then that, drove it for all of 2 weeks before I changed jobs and got a company car as part of the deal. I purchased it for £1950 and sold it 2 weeks later for £1750.

T reg Mk2 Escort 1.3GL which was a right off rebuilt by my dad. Acquired in 1987 and given to my sister in 1989. So had it for 2 years though it somehow felt much longer than that at the time. She crashed it after 6 months. I "upgraded" to a B regd Sierra 1.8GL ex-Rep car from a place my dad knew. Kept that car for 8 years.

The number of people who crashed their first cars is amazing! My 2001 fiesta is still going strong after 3 years.

I'm not so surprised - there's a reason young drivers have high (though unjustifiably high in recent years imo) premiums. I would never have admitted it at the time but my crash was 100% my fault and to be honest I was driving like an eejit all the time in that car.

The odd side of my little prang was getting back more than I paid for the car as a payout whilst paying about £100 less in the next years premium. It seems that any incident now produces a rocketing premium the next year, even if the drive had no no-claims to lose.

Mind you I'm sure it was about £1200 for my first years insurance, must have been 2004 when I got my first car and given how much I was making with a part time job a good old percentage of my wages went on insuring and running the car

My first car was and still is a Ford Capri 2.8 Injection, had it just over 6 years now. I have every intention of seeing another 15-20 years out of it.

99' Honda Accord 2.0 Exec - 4-5 years after I passed, have had it for a grand total of 2 months and plan to run it for at least a year and maybe 1 or 2 more years depending on renewal price and the state of the car. But I already fancy something a little smaller and maybe something to play around with like an MX5.
